Hello after long time i decided to move from windows 7 to windows 10 so i used hdd from my old pc and copied all files i wanted to keep into it and install windows 10 on my default hdd all was smooth and after windows was installed i start to copy all files from the old hdd to the one i am using but after some time copying stuck and my old hdd started to make some clicky noises and my whole computer froze and i had to restart it. After restarting my old hdd doesnt seem to make any noise in bios it looks like this the first one is the one iam using and the second is the old one

In disk manager it looks like this:

i dont see the old one on the top but i see it on the bottom as Disk 1 but its unknown and not initialized, if i try to initialize it i get error as you can see on the picture

In device manager i can see it but it has the name Neznáme zariadenie (unknown device)

is there any way to get files from it back? thanks for any help

How old is it? Maybe you can inspect it with a program called HD Tune. It has options to check speed or check for errors

It is 10years old or so i wasnt using it anymore for a very long time i just used it to backup my files during windows reinstallation but it looks like it wasnt the best idea... I will take a look at this Hd Tune program and update you

Well i feel like its just waste of time and the old disk is lost. I ran hd tune program for like 30min and it scanned 5 rows or so and all of them were damaged

Any time you copy files or transfer them from one HDD to another you need a program that works quickly; especially with an old HDD. Sometimes if you pull the HDD from the computer and leave it in a dark and dry place at room temperature for several months the HDD may come back to some life on its own since static dust build up inside an HDD may no longer be affecting a connection or curcuit or disc. However if this connection or curcuit or disc has been damaged from the excessive heat caused by the static dust then chances are you will not be able to make a full recovery of your data. If you don't want to wait for a few months then you can take the old HDD to a data recovery tech and they will dismantle the HDD, remove the disc from the HDD and retrieve any available data.

When a hard drive starts clicking, one reason is bad sector. It can be remedied by programs like PC Tools Performance Toolkit to fix bad sectors. The reason why it clicks is that the head of the hard drive is stuck at reading a particular sector. When data can't be read, the computer tries it multiple times and that's the clicking sound you hear. During this time, your system may freeze.

You should try booting your old HDD in your original system andboot up to Command Line.
Run CHKDSK
It should find bad sectors and fix them for you, if possible.
I think it's just bad timing for it to coincide with your new system.

It'll only find bad sectors if used with the /r command, i.e. chkdsk /r - that'll scan the entire disc for bad sectors, and depending of the size of the disc will take hours to finish!

A long time ago I used a program called Spinrite to fix a clicking HD. It's not a fast program by no stretch, I think it took two days at the highest level of error correction, but it worked. I designed a website for a friend and had a copy on one of my old HDs and I was trying to find it. I have another cpu I put the HD and just let Spinrite run. I discovered the program on a Hiren's Boot CD but when you go to Hiren's site it's not listed on their old versions anymore. It's not a free program so maybe that's the reason. If you want check and see if it's still on the disk, try version 9.2 or 9.3. You have to burn it to a disk and then it boots into a dos enviroment. Hirens Boot CD Even if it doesn't help you, you should still consider getting the latest version. It's a nice tool to have just in case.

Clicking is physical contact. It can be the heads against the plattera(crash) or physical limitations because nothing is telling the heads to stop moving because they don't know where to stop. Like a old record player that never senses the location of the needle.

This can be the mounts or cable, bad contacts or firmware. That means making sure your drivers and firmware are up to date and all our contacts are secure.

I'd try it on a different piece of equipment before I gave up on it. A new external mount or mount it internally (if PC).
Since it is 10 years old then make sure you have the jumpers set correctly. If it was your main drive then it may have been set as master instead of slave and I think 10 year old drives also had the autodetect option.

Old drives usually are slow spindle motors or bearing issues and create whirring sounds instead of clicking, unless you ignored those sounds and let it run resulting in a crash.

Good luck. You reminded me that I have a number of old drives around that I should run for a few minutes just to keep them from seizing.
