true all that. until the last line where they go out of their way to say "the individual" should check out EveryoneOn. which -- i'm guessing -- is a bit tricky to do with a landline and a toaster over.

back to the browsers, the problem disappeared as fast as it began. after like 3 weeks of HELL back in april, things have been running pretty well for 2-3 months now. now, just as SUDDENLY, everything has frozen up again. can easily take 1-2 hrs to get a page open.
again, tho, all my woes are concentrated in IE and FF. other things -- orbit, uTor, various system updates -- are running np and full speed, same as always. so i figured, again, that it was some kind of virus/malware in the browsers. HOWEVER, after 3-4 days of hell redux, since last night the pc is suddenly giving me a "dead fan" warning! dead fan?! is that just COINCIDENCE? why would overheating target browsers any more than any other app? anyway, our computer shop here isn't even OPEN these days (covid) -- is a fan easy to fix/swap out? (HP laptop) in the meantime i'm aiming a household fan at the thing -- will that do ANYTHING, or am i better off just tryna prop machine up a coupla inches (atop decks of cards or w/e)? not the biggest DIY guy; upgrading RAM is the fanciest thing i've ever done on my own. ironically, i asked about SMOKE coming out of PC about 5 yrs back. at that point i figured my days were numbered, but surprisingly no lasting effects whatsoever! ditto when it happened AGAIN 2-3 yrs later. so i'm a little slow to react to a FAN warning...when the PC's already been on FIRE twice!!!! |

good times, bad times.
hear my fan suddenly COME BACK ON tonight! i dunno what triggered it or how long it'll last, but for now i'm giddy. about 1 minute later -- 1 minute! -- i hear this ungodly "clang clang clang" sound, which i last heard years back the 2 times that smoke came out of the PC. metallic grinding sound -- like drive head dragging across the disk or something. i rush to shut down the PC before the damage gets worse. after a pause, tentatively reboot, whereupon i notice 2 things: 1) first boot in 2 weeks not accompanied by "dead fan" warning! woo-hoo!! so i guess it's true. 2) the clang clang clang is my KEYS next to the PC bouncing around in the fanstream. D'OH! so i guess i'm none the worse, and now i have a fan again! proving once again that "he who hesitates is...saved". this is particular funny in the wake of my microwave, which fixed its "disconnected ribbon cable" issue with a good WHACK! on the side of the panel. pinball style. it pays not to overthink things. |
