microwave keypad fail
usually takes 1:10 - 1:30 to nuke a cup of coffee; generally do this by hitting the "add 1 min" button twice, then bailing midway thru the 2d half.
for a couple weeks this button has been acting flaky, tho, so i've had to resort to digitally entering "1:20" or w/e. even that turned flaky yesterday, but pulling the plug and "rebooting" the oven cleared that right up. cleared up the first problem as well, in fact. for a while. as of TODAY, tho, neither method works and the "reboot" leads nowhere. just flashing 8s on display. meanwhile the oven ITSELF still works great it seems to me...if i cud just get past the KEYPAD. (actually wondered if maybe i had hit "child protect" somehow, but reboot would have cleared that off anyways) any kludge to get the thing PERMANENTLY RUNNING? i am willing to use plug itself as a sort of stop / start control. o how i long for my first micro back, with its mechanical DIAL as controller! |

Will 9 and 0 work? It would be the same as 1:20. If not, then it's probably time for a new oven. They aren't expensive. $120 for a 1100W 1.2 Cu.ft. Also, seeing as microwaves are cheap, it doesn't make sense to repair it. Ever hear of someone paying $50 to repair a VCR, even though they hit rock bottom prices and you could buy a new one for $19.99 or cheaper? Your car can run like a dream but if the transmission (gearbox) shits the bed then you're still fucked. I'd recycle or junk that oven instantly.

$120?!
i thought they were like $34.99 on the high end! or $19.99 for starter model @walmart. (which, ironically, might come with a DIAL....) no, 0 and 9 don't work. keypad flat-out DEAD, pending some sort of EKG shock to the system (which unplug/plug used to supply). still wondering about child lock. imma have a closer look tomorrow. i was half-wondering whether there might be some sort of master "reset" button on these things...similar to the one on laptops. just in case REBOOT is not as powerful as i'm making it out to be. |

Perhaps if you told us the model of your microwave, we could research further, but personally, I'd been inclined to buy a new one. Heck, if you can buy a new one here for less than £40, I'm sure you can get one in the States for less than $40. Having had a look on ye olde Amazon, cheapest touchpad mircowave is $58, cheapest jogdial microwave is $75. Walmart's cheapest microwave is $49.88 for a Mainstays 0.7 Cu. Ft. 700W Black Microwave with 10 Power Levels I can't quite work out how you can say 'it works great', and 'the keypad's broke' at the same time - my dad used to say 'my oven works well, other than it makes the power switch off' - that made no sense either.

Unless you're confident dismantling and cleaning contacts in the keypad it looks like you'll need a new oven. I sometimes use a 4B pencil to refresh telephone keypad contacts.
But I expect that the keypad here is a sealed module that's hard to open up, and impossible to put together after. But the oven is broke so it won't make it worse to have a go. And one more piece of advice: UNPLUG IT FIRST!!

I'm slightly concerned that you genuinely may consider 'servicing' your microwave yourself.
So I'm going to post this here, and then for safety's sake, I'm going to close this thread. Microwave Capacitors are dangerous, they retain their power for a very long time: Do Not, and I cannot emphasise this enough, Do Not attempt to service your microwave yourself. Thread closed, PlanetSuzy will accept no responsibility for pelham's sudden demise. |
