Conversion of video file format and saving space
Hello everyone....
I have about 150+ GB of video on my HD. I would like to convert those video files to some other format and save space (also make space for more videos, lol). The following are my objectives: I. Maintain about 90-100% of the quality as the original file and save the MAX on space. The smaller the output (converted) file, the better. II. At the same time I am also interested in changing the aspect ratio of most of the video files from 640x480 (4:3) to 512x288 (16:9). III. I will be viewing all these video files on my computer/laptop only. Not on Ipod/PS2/PS3/XBOX, etc. The following are my questions: 1. Which video file format could achieve the above mentioned objectives??? MP4?? or FLV?? or some other format??? 2. Also, which video conversion software is THE BEST for attaining these objectives?? and what are the settings (like fpv, bitrate, crf, quality quantizer, 2-pass coding, etc. and the whole nine yards) to use in order to maintain 90-100% of the original file quality and reduce the file size to the maximum possible??? I have tried several video conversion softwares with no luck. Some of them screw up the quality and some of them made the output file size more than the original. The more details you give, the better....Your response would be highly appreciated!!! |

You could always re-encode your videos using either DivX Converter, and change the video bitrate to make a smaller file. But be warned doing this at times may result in a pixelated video.
Alternatively you could use VirtualDub to re-encoded your videos at a lower bitrate. The results from VirtualDub will be slightly better than that of DivX Converter. Not to mention that you could use VirtualDub to re-encode your videos to any other format you want. |

You dont mention what the source files are.

Reason: Spelling
Are they full HD or wmv,avi (divx/xvid) files? With full HD clips you ill be able to save a lot of space but with wmv`s & avi`s you wont really save much space at all.depending on the source file quality. Quote:
for example a file has a bitrate of 1000kbs if you reduce this to 900kbs you will reduce the quality around 10%,so a 100mb file becomes 90mb Quote:
You can do this but the chances are you will en up with a squashed looking video, you can force the DAR in Virtualdub with cropping, but you will end up losing at least 15% of the actual frame, Personally it isnt worth the time/effort IMO Regarding software,Id suggest using Virtualdub (free open source) You can re-encode the video & audio (and try changing the DAR if you want) theres a full guide on how to everything here Code:

Maybe you might want to read up on Avi ReComp. It's designed to do just what you want, though just as everyone said if you compress the file, the quality will suffer. Maybe you might want to try compressing the audio of each movie. If the audio is stereo, try converting it to a super low quality mono. That might save you a few mb in size and leave the video quality untouched.

Strange as it may sound you might want to look at converting it to .flv.
whenever i convert anything from flv to avi or wmv in order to maintain the same quality i usually have to at least double(or more) the file size, so you would think the reverse might be true. i use magic video converter but its not freeware. |
