On one my hard drives I would play a video or transfer a video to another drive and one minute the video is fine and the next minute it's not there anymore.

For example I was playing today a video over 300MB in size. The video was playing fine and then after I played it,it went to 0 bytes. The name and thumbnail is still there but there is no video. I've been having this issue recently and I was wondering what the issue is because this hasn't happened to me before?

I would firstly rebuild the icon cache and then make sure you have a default video player set to play that video file type.

Download and install VLC movie player and the plug in pack.
VLC will play virtually everything and I've been using it for years and it never gives a problem.
On top of this it's completely free.

For a player, I prefer MPC-HC (also free), but I've used VLC in the past as well and used to have it installed just to verify files that wouldn't play.

As for the HDD's, which this isn't likely an actual drive problem, you can test their health with Crystal Disk Info.

One of the power connecting cables might be damaged, not connected properly, come loose or have a short.

i could be a corrupt master file table as well. basically the mft is a database where all file informations are stored.

the next question you should consecutively ask yourself is: why do these symptoms (no matter what's the exact cause) occur? maybe your hdd is broken! to diagnose this i'd highly suggest you CrystalDiskInfo as well! there is a portable version (no install needed) of it available at PortableApps.com.
you really should deeply check your hdd for any hardware malfunction!

First , see if the hdd it is ok, use HDTune to see the health and to scan for bad sectors(the long test)...

What type of HDD do you have? Is it one of those Toshiba Canvio or WD Passport Portable HDDs models?
I heard that the USB boards on these drives become loose, after awhile, and that it may also lead to file corruptions and eventually the HDD failing, over time.

This is how they make portable HDDs, these days, btw.

I would check with CrystalDiskInfo to see the health of the HDD, to exclude that it is not a HDD problem.
If it doesn't show up any errors or bad sectors, it means that the USB board have become loose.

I did a simple disk repair and for now everything seems OK. Thanks to all who posted!
