i mentioned it elsewhere, but i find this show to be a masterpiece. and it appears 99% of the critics think likewise. what few negative comments out there are generally along the lines of "exhausting", "depressing", and "torture pr0n".

but i do have a couple minor complaints, as well as a host of questions. first among them, that STUPID "fubu" joke in ep 2. what were they thinking?!

and what TIME PERIOD is that ep supposed to be? skyscrapers, electric light, tubal ligation?! last one alone places it in the 1930s at the earliest.

it led me to think it was an "alternate reality", and that the overall series was going to be a lot more scifi in nature. and yet, ridgeway got there just fine on surface roads, and no other ep ever had idiosyncrasies like that again.

then in ep 3, what did martin mean when he said he had "much bigger" secrets than hiding cora? one earlier girl would constitute a *similar* secret -- not one "much bigger". i took his words to mean she was HIS DAUGHTER!! (reinforced by how bitchy his wife was about her)

did anyone else think this? it was not until ep 7 -- when the girl spoke of her own escape from slavery -- that i realized she was just another runaway like cora.

which brings us to another LAME JOKE -- martin's repeated comments about letting "grace" be your guide. how cheesy. lose that and FUBU, the series would have been so much better.

now, something meatier -- who had the stillborn kid at the beginning of the series and what was MABEL'S PROBLEM with it? when they come back to it in ep 10, mabel mentions that her friend has had 2 prior stillbirths already. so is the one in the first ep one of those, or is it indeed #3, artistically "interrupted" by a 9-ep flashforward?

or did she have one of her own? is that why she's so affected by the friend having one at the end? or did the friend (or her husband) kill the "loaner" babies? or the wife herself?

big bloody mess, wife dead(?), husband blamed for something, and mabel having a nervous breakdown. WHAT THE FOOK IS HAPPENING HERE?!

other than the above, show was a masterpiece. eps 4 thru 9, especially.

Sounds interesting, it is going on my to watch list. Another in a long list of proud Canadian moments.

I will be interested to see how historically accurate it is knowing how the US likes to fuck with numbers. Official numbers put it at 6,000 slaves made it to Canada but the real numbers are closer to 30,000...

The ones that made it to upper States were relentlessly pursued but the US knew better than to come into Canada.

i started watching "underground", btw. this is a similar 2016 series, less the "scifi" aspect. and man, it is hella corny. bad writing and bad acting make this one actually less realistic than the one with imaginary trains running all over the place!

plus i'm up to ep 4 and no one has "run" yet! whole lot of *planning* going on -- is the entire series gonna be ON the plantation, discussing how to FIND the underground once they leave?!

finished s01 of underground, and i'd just like to reiterate: so corny. serious runaway drama for a while, but then they find themselves in BATMAN-like predicaments! can they escape? will they survive?? will they free each other with some ridiculous gadget one of them just happens to be carrying?! will they create one on the spot, a la "macguyver"?! tune in tomorrow, folks....

then scenes of gratuitous violence reminiscent of kill bill.

throw in some corny speeches -- esp towards the end -- for good measure.

funniest, tho, was all these fantasy/hallucination scenes in ep 9. so many that i lost track of what was ACTUALLY happening -- i was like "is he dead? is he alive? is he still back in that jailcell? did he actually escape and is doing this for real? is this a flashback to plantation days, and even then was he just imagining this part?" so confusing! when one of the guys gets caught, it wasn't till like 20 mins later that i realized "oh wait a minute -- he actually IS caught!" *dizzy*

finally -- WARNING: SPOILER -- the lone person of the 7 to have made it to freedom decides in the last ep that she doesn't deserve freedom, and spends the waning moments of the show tryna smuggle herself BACK DOWN to the plantation! geesh. 9 effin eps escaping the damn place, and she just goes back on a whim!! cue season 2!

and the acting! so over the top. aldis hodge -- normally so good in other shows -- seems to be channelling seinfeld's mohel here. talk about overkill.

otoh, jurnee smollett and amirah vann are both excellent, and the former is shown in various states of undress as the series progresses. i can't complain.

That's the point where i would be yelling at the screen like she could actually hear me "NOOOOO, run you dummy, you earned it". But then again a similar scenario played out in season 5 of my favorite show Outlander, so its no secret that that method of character development works to draw us in.

Does this show have any sort of "time manipulation" premise included??? That would pull me "all in" aka the show Timeless.

not SUPPOSED to have "time manipulation", but one of the realworld chars to show up -- patty cannon -- actually died 30 years before the show is set. it's like tossing in JFK to a 9/11 show.

back to batman/macguyver, in a coupla scenes the main gal (smollett) picks a toxic plant "devil's snare" to use as a local anaesthetic. later when her captors order her to "take off that dress" (a common theme), she throws it on the bonfire which causes the wad of it in her pocket to create a massive toxic cloud. everyone hallucinates (herself included) -- with 2 ppl getting stabbed -- and she manages to escape.

other scene, she and a male runaway steal fancy clothes and pass themselves off as free blacks (visiting northerners). almost caught until she starts namedropping italian marbles and curtain threadcounts -- and which shops in boston have the best service -- which leads to white guy deciding, yeah, i guess they're legit.

in a private moment she tells her stunned partner (a field slave) that house slaves "just pick up things" by being around white ppl all day. fair enuf...until she later claims to have picked up the PIANO likewise! indeed, in the next close call, local sheriff calls her bluff and asks her to serenade him...which she does flawlessly!

maybe THIS qualifies as "time manipulation": in earlier scene, trackers and dogs are close on their heels, and partner is urging her to run faster. instead, she stops to pick the aforementioned devil's snare.

next scene trackers come upon their dogs, all dead from poisoning. the same trackers who were, what, 20 FEET behind the dogs?!

so basically the dogs came upon the trap, ate the plants, and keeled over and died, all in like 3 SECONDS. okeeeeeeeyyyy...

i swore i would call it a day at the end of s01, but curiosity got the better of me, so i'm watching s02 after all. in the first few eps alone, we have:

smollett performing surgery on herself to remove bullet...including shooting a GUN at the wound to cauterize her suture-job

hodge picking his handcuffs, relocking them when a passerby interrupts, then picking them again.

hodge scraping thru base of prison cart, monte cristo style, and breaking off piece of undercarriage to use as crowbar. then using same to break axle itself, causing cart to crash/break apart (whereupon he runs).

fellow runaway who found cash in s01 finale is now the owner/massa of a plantation of his own. money aside, i think it's been like a few MONTHS since then!

frequent interactions with harriet tubman, incl calling her MOSES (historically accurate)...without any clarification that they don't mean their fellow runaway moses, who just recently died. suddenly someone is like "i have to go meet moses..." and i'm wondering anew whether his death was another of those "hallucinations".

time-travelling patty cannon decides she's got her hands full and is gonna retrieve meloni from the prison she got him sent to to help her now pursue tubman...and said prison just happens to be NEXT DOOR to her camp!

smollett kills one of cannon's gang and disappears. late that night gang buries him in random field, after spending day complaining they've lost her scent. she then RISES FROM THE GRAVE, zombie style -- she's been hiding underground all afternoon/night 10 feet from the spot they just so happen to pick!
