Ban inflated file sizes?!

Can please be done something against that? I've seen videos in 1920x1080 at about 600MB for 30 minutes, then I go to another thread and it's 3.6GB??? Can please the forum do something against that? It costs download space and space on external hard drives who are like 70$ for 2TB where I live so you can calculate what kind of difference that makes.

What you have to realise is that just the resolution alone doesn't say anything about actual video quality.

The actual bitrate, expressed in Kilobit or Megabit persecond is what's just as important. A 600MB 30 minute 1080p file has a bitrate just shy of 2700Kbit per second, that's really low and leads to a visible amount of unsharpness and blurriness. You might aswell stick to 720p at a bitrate that low, it will look identical to 1080.

The 3.6GB file has a bitrate of 16000Kbit per second, while I tend to agree this is on the high side(the highest I would go is 10000-12000Kbit, beyond that you need a 2160p/4K file to actually hold the details of such a high bitrate), the difference between this and that 600MB file will be very clear and visilble unless you're watching on a phone or an old laptop with 1366x768 resolution.


You may see the resolution as a vehicle and the bitrate as the actual cargo if you don't understand the above. A 600MB 30min 1080p file is like using a large truck(1080P) to carry a small amount of cargo(the low bitrate) that could easilly fit inside a van(720p).


Simply put, if you want files less than 1GB stick to 720p downloads, there's no point in 1080p and these filesizes.

I wish more people (everybody) would focus on bitrate more in this forum; some do provide bitrate in the screencap or additionally; much appreciated. In fact I am baffled that it is not a required bit of info. Letting us know that a file is 1080 etc without the bitrate is almost pointless/meaningless. Though with experience one can divine an approximation of the videos quality.

I would rather have a 600mb 720 file than the same file size 1080 everyday! I have made that choice many times when I can find the better quality, higher bitrate, 720 file.


JenniN if you have a problem with large files don't download them. Stick to the Standard Def threads. There are plenty of phenomenal quality 960X540 files, which is 1/4 HD, and with a 2.5mb bitrate or greater are fine in my book especially when the 720 or 1080 files are insanely big. I myself have had to make that choice before because as a free user it would have taken too long to download them; storing them has never been a consideration of mine.

Buy a large USB and store them on that. I just bought a 1/2 terabyte USB that I use as a backup for all my vids; filled my 250 Gb.

One of the few good things I have to say about a competitor bb to suzy is that they've long required bitrates to be posted along with filesize and resolution. Very helpful.

I see you have never watched a 360p or 480p on 32"+ screen these videos look like crap
I am using a 42.5" TV as my monitor it is set to 1440p resolution now I only download at a min of 1080p 8500 bitrate. Anything lower looks like crap on my screen.

Even better would be to require bppf (bits per pixel and frame), or at least that's the most useful single measure I've come across in this context. Not only does it take resolution as well as framerate already into account, making it easier to compare the effective quality of, say, a 720p/24fps and a 1080p/60fps version; but it's also in a nice number range, typically between 0.01 and 1, so one needn't bother with "k-" and "M-" prefixes all the time; and it's even directly meaningful, in a way: Like, "this version compresses the video so that it uses an average of 0.1 bits of data for each pixel in each frame", versus "uncompressed video uses 24 bits of data for each pixel in each frame", for the single-byte-per-channel RGB colour standard.

If I had any say on what goes on here, I'd set a file size limit in the regular PATM section: one can find scenes that clock in at over 2 gigs there (usually artificially upscaled).

They currently comply in terms of resolution, but their size defeats the whole purpose of having separate regular and Hi Def PATM sections.

Maybe I'm misremembering, but I thought upscaled vids, AKA, "AI Enhanced" vids weren't allowed in PATM and members were instructed to post that type of vid in their own GP threads. Maybe that was changed? I don't think there ever was an official rule, because only a handful of members were upscaling; As it's fairly time consuming and resource hungry for computers.

It's possible, but I don't see PATM getting its own upscaled section. PATM is already busy enough. VR/3D has been on the forum for a while now and that was planted in GP. Personally I don't mind the extra storage space required for upscaled vids because many scenes from the 90's to early 2000's look like they were recorded with a tiny potato.

They aren't allowed in PATM, unless they are an official release.

I'm 'newish' but -for example- 4k content is creating huge throughput in many forums- as vimla & c0ntr0lz pointed out. The irony being 4k is indistinguishable to the human eye during playback. I would be willing to bet the majority of requestors/downloaders have a PC/laptop that although capable of playing 4k because they splurged on a good video card/processor/RAM- they are probably viewing on a monitor that is only capable of 1080p because the monitor is almost always the Achilles heal. It is only a matter of time before those 8K posts start coming in. I would suggest a plan to start throttling those requests. My SO is a SysAdmmin so everything from the MPOE back (Cisco 3550XL switch etc.) just needs a connection so other than living in the Northern California foothills where we were affected but fortunately not evacuated during the CALDOR fire, we could make the switch but emerging from a global pandemic which keeps evolving- I'd be willing to bet the vast majority of PS members lack the hardware or funds to accommodate 4k let alone 8k playback.
