I use Mac OS X Mavericks 10.9.5. On July 21, 2013, "Hard Nard," suggested the following mac browser to download YouTube videos:
http://torchbrowser.com, which used to download YouTube videos, as of October 2015.

Torchbrowser was a great downloading browser. It was simplicity itself - if you wanted to download a YouTube video, all you had to do was 1. play the video and 2. click on a blinking blue arrow on the torch browser.

I am looking for a replacement browser for Torch that downloads YouTube videos as simply as Torch did.

Firefox has a good Add-On: YouTube Video and Audio Downloader.

You can download directly from the Youtube page on which you are watching the video, in a variety of sizes and formats.

I've found that the Safari Extention "SaveFrom.net helper" is very simple and easy to use – and works very well (on OS X 10.8 that is, you'll have to check if it works on 10.9).

I use mainly FireFox and I can download with FlashGot, no problems.

If you want to be able to use any browser try this:

http://apowersoft.com/mac-video-downloader

This stand-alone app lets you download from nearly any site that has video. Just copy the url of the video to the clipboard, then click on "paste url" on the application.

You can purchase the app ($39.99) or do like I do and just use it in "evaluate" mode (limited to two downloads at a time).

Been using it for over a year now, from 10.9 to (now) 10.11.

I recommend Video Downloadhelper. You can get it as an extension/add on in both Chrome and Firefox.

jdownloader is good, but it's just a standalone application that you can't use to browse and seek video files.

The way to use it is research and find the files in a regular browser, copy the download links, then paste them into jdownloader.

For downloading YouTube videos it is overkill, and I'm not even sure if jdownloader can actually do it.

You can and it's especially good with ones that have the padlock on them and can't be downloaded with Video Download Helper.

You can thumb down the arrow on the video size for different sizes on the vid (like 720p) as you can see you can also extract a m4a.
