Reason: disguise paysite name
p0rnpr0s.com it gave me opportunities like this: all 3 types are in HD. so i right click on each and try to downlload which file is bigger, so it will have better guality i guess. same file has in MPG format 944 MB in MP4 it has 667 MB and in WMV HD it has 681 MB so my question: 1, which file format is more new/modern ? or with better codecs or is it better playing in video players ? 2, which has more quality vdieo ? ty Please never use paysite names undisguised in the forum. Fixed. |

the mp4 is more recent and is generally a better file format quality wise.
wmv and mpg are not popular these days. |

1) To answer your first question ... MP4 is certainly more "modern" and widely used today. Among containers that support compression, it also has the best chance of being playable somewhere other than your current PC. It generally moves well between Windows, Macintosh, Linux and tablet platforms. Of course, this is mostly controlled by the actual codec used within the MP4 container, but if it's a commercial site, chances are they aren't doing anything too esoteric that would affect compatibility to any great effect.
2) I would guess that with three files of the same content coming from a single site that there is only one true "source" and that therefore the quality between them would be fairly similar. Remember that file size has a lot to do with compression, which MPG doesn't do ... so right off the bat it's going to be larger, and not necessarily because it has better quality. For the other two, the quality is going to come down to the amount of compression and the efficiency of whatever tool they use to achieve it. WMV does not generally compress as well as MP4 before you start to noticeably lose quality. So those file sizes seem right in line with my theory. The best would be to choose a relatively small (and preferably recent) sample file, download it in all three formats and visually compare for yourself on your playback device of choice. It's a safe bet that whatever you find in that file is going to be fairly consistent across the site. Save for improvements made over time as they've upgraded tools, they most likely create all of their MPG's the same way, all of their MP4's the same way, etc. Lastly, MPG and even WMV, while dated, still have their uses. Assuming it's MPEG2 (as opposed to MPEG1) the MPG would be the simplest files to burn to a DVD for viewing on a set top box. Most good burning applications can do this with files in that format without any conversion or authoring tools. About the only advantage I can think of off the top of my head for WMV is "out of the box" Windows compatibility. If you care to share your downloads with someone who is, shall we say, "digitally challenged" they can probably play your WMV files with nothing more than the Windows Media Player that shipped on their system and a couple of Windows Updates that installed some default codecs. To play back MPEG2 MPG's or MP4 files, they're going to have to install a third party codec pack from somewhere. Most likely not a problem for anyone who frequents a site like this one ... but it takes all levels of computer expertise to make up our digital world. :-) |

i agree with jbrovo17, also learnt quite a few stuff from his post, yea file sizes are due to file compression and codecs used. the function and application of the file you want to use is all that matters actually. if you want to store it as a soft copy forever, and you have a player that you always use containing the codecs needed, just go for the smallest file option.

They likely all use different resolutions and bitrate. So the only real way to know is to download all three and compare. Then you will know for future use of that site which files to look for. And they typically put a description by each type.

1. definitely MP4.
2. it depends on bit rates and formats. if bit rates are the same, I'd say MP4 is the winner. if lower MP4 and higher WMV/MPG, you guess. As others said.

I'd always go with mp4. Not only is it more recent and better quality, but it can play on Windows with no problem and Mac with it's default Quicktime.

I personally prefer mp4 files, and when given a choice I always select that download option.

i'd choose MP4 by default.
but, if I plan to watch it later on TV or another player beside computer, i'd rather hv MPG. because its a common format. my tv hv a usb port, and it can play MPG but not MP4. |
