This is obviously a sad and senseless occurrence; however in the US, it's also an unremarkable occurrence. For some perspective, there have already been at least 175 mass shootings in the US so far in 2021.

Gun violence is a daily fact of life here in the US.

In Houston, where I live, there were over 400 murders last year. The vast majority were shootings and many of the victims were innocent bystanders.

So far this year, there is a 44% increase in homicides here compared to the same time last year. Again, most due to gun violence.

The story is much the same in communities (large and small) across the US.

New Zealand man threatened with prosecution over penis pothole drawings

Geoff Upson says he has drawn about 100 penises around potholes in a bid to force his local council to fix them

A New Zealand man who began drawing very large penises around the potholes in his home city of Auckland in 2018 in the hope of attracting the attention of his local council has been threatened with police action.

In a video road safety campaigner Geoff Upson made after the most recent addition to his oeuvre, he said: “I’m about sick of calling Auckland transport.”

“So what I’ve done is I’ve gone and drawn a great artist’s impression of a penis.”

The video shows two green and pink neon penises. Upson helpfully identified the address where the newly eye-catching potholes occur, and their dimensions.

“The stretch of road from here to the end of that other penis is 48 metres. The width of my lines is approximately 1.2 metres,” he says.

Auckland transport has now promised to take legal action against the phallic fuss-maker. Upson received a call from police last week, following a complaint over the his graffiti, the New Zealand Herald reported, which Auckland council says poses “a safety risk and distraction” to drivers, as well as being dangerous to carry out, according to Stuff.

Upson estimates that he has drawn 100 penises to date.

In 2019, Middlesbrough council in the UK repaired potholes within a week of their being graphically branded, the BBC reported.

When a Manchester man used penises to achieve the same result in 2015, the council reacted furiously, calling the drawings “obscene”, “stupid”, “insulting” and “a waste of valuable time and resources”. In response, the anonymous artist told the BBC the council “must be very prudish”.

Pokémon card sales at major US
retailer halted over security fears

US retail giant Target is suspending in-store sales of Pokémon and sports trading cards amid safety concerns as customers vie for the collectibles.

Target, which has more than 1,900 outlets in the US, made the decision after a man drew a gun in a fight over cards outside a store in Wisconsin.

"The safety of our guests and our team is our top priority," the company said in a statement to US media.

Sales of trading cards have rocketed amid the pandemic.

The suspension of in-store sales is temporary, the company said, adding that online sales are not affected.

Walmart, a top competitor to Target, says they have also seen increasing demand, but do not currently have plans to block sales.

A fight broke out in a car park outside a Target in Brookfield, Wisconsin, on 7 May, after four men allegedly assaulted another man over sports trading cards, reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The victim, who had a licence to carry a concealed gun, ended the fight by drawing his weapon, police say.

No shots were fired, and the four men ranging in age from 23 to 35 fled and were later arrested.

The store, a nearby grocery store and a children's healthcare clinic briefly went on lockdown.

Before announcing the ban, Target had previously said they were limiting trading card sales to one package per day per customer.

Sales of trading cards, and especially Pokémon with its famous catchphrase, "gotta catch 'em all", have surged in value in recent years.

Videos online of social media influencers opening packages of cards in the hopes of find a rare one have increased interest, experts say.

In March, a card for a type of Pokémon known as a Charizard sold for nearly $400,000 (£285,000).

Auction site eBay says sales of Pokémon cards in the US shot up 574% between 2019-20. Trade in football cards grew by 1,586%.

there must have been more than one incident with the pokemon cards, however. a lone shooting at a single branch would not likely trigger a nationwide suspension, imho.

Ambulance crews will start using iPads to send photographs of accident and stroke victims to specialist hospital doctors so that they can make rapid diagnoses and save some patients a trip to A&E.

NHS England is giving 30,000 iPads to regional ambulance services to help paramedics decide what care to give and whether to take someone to hospital or treat them at the scene.

The tablet computers will be a vital link between ambulance crews and hospital consultants, whose digital interaction will make treatment faster and better, NHS England said.

For example, the devices will let paramedics show an A&E department how badly injured patients have been in a road traffic crash, so that they can prepare for their arrival. They will also allow crews access to patients’ medical records to help them build a better picture of their health.
