The worst ravages of the Covid-19 pandemic could have been avoided had the world not “lost” a month at the start of the crisis to indecision and complacency, concludes the first major independent review of the crisis.

“Covid-19 is the 21st century’s Chernobyl moment,” says the report. “The system as it stands now is clearly unfit to prevent another novel and highly infectious pathogen, which could emerge at any time, from developing into a pandemic”.

A major review analysing the global response to the coronavirus outbreak has delivered a damning verdict: the international health system was “clearly unfit” to prevent the pandemic, and needs radical reforms to avoid similar mistakes in the future.

In an 86-page report, supported by a raft of supplementary annexes, the Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response (IPPPR) – led by two former heads of governments and a host of international experts – sets out a range of recommendations to better prepare for emerging health threats.

Five lucky people in Ohio will win $1 million each just for getting vaccinated for covid-19, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced on Wednesday. The new lottery, which starts handing out cash weekly on May 26, will be administered through the Ohio Department of Health as well as the Ohio Lottery and will be paid for with federal covid-19 relief funds, according to DeWine.

“Two weeks from tonight, on May 26, we will announce the winner of a separate drawing for adults, adults who have received at least their first dose of the vaccine,” Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said during a covid-19 update that was livestreamed on YouTube.

“This announcement will occur each Wednesday for five weeks, and the winner each Wednesday will receive one million dollars,” DeWine continued.

DeWine cited a number of different private companies that were offering incentives to get people vaccinated, like Kroger grocery stores which is currently offering employees $100 cash to get one of the three coronavirus vaccines that have been approved for use in the U.S.—Johnson & Johnson, Moderna, and Pfizer-BioNTech.

If this is indicative of the language used in the report I'm not reading any more of this overly complex waffle.

If anyone besides me noticed that the other dsy a Pfizer official was quoted as they basically came out and said that they "don't know what they don't know". It was packaged in a blurb about anything is possible if it was "outside of our clinical trials". It was an about-face to the company line that they have been toeing thus far and yes my laywers were responsible for backing them into a corner and admitting publicky that there is no factual long term data to suoport their claims. If they didn't do it a court would have made them do it.

But they stopped short of supporting UK studies that say that the second dose is likely 3 to 4 times more effective if the interval is 12 weeks as compared to the 3 weeks Pfizer now says is the window. Again though they said that their was no long term data to support the 12 weeks claim, ironic isn't it Pfizer.
