Custom Cumpilations - Software recs?

I keep wanting to make my own custom cumpilations sometime, but I'm not sure what software would be best and easiest to use. That's also free. I tried DaVinci Resolve Studio 17 but I'm not sure I liked it much.

I just want something simple to cut and string together clips with, maybe add in some text for credits. I guess the tricky part is working with different video files and aspect ratios. But I imagine there's something out there that can do this smoothly? I didn't like how DaVinci would always output to 1080p and I couldn't even figure out where to change that.

I don't plan to mix 480p with HD scenes anyways. But a lot of my 480p classics sometimes have varied aspect ratios I don't want messed up.

Any suggestions?

Many of these video authoring packages works in a similar fashion.You set your 'project' parameters up front e.g. ratio or dimensions (16:9 or 1080x720 etc.) and drag your individual clips of varying and supported formats onto a timeline where you can sequence them. Usually when you do the export you have the option to choose the output file format, overall bitrate, frame rate, dimensions etc.

Based on the final aspect ratio and dimensions you choose, all clips should automatically be resized and fit the ratio & dimensions, and some may have black bars down the sides or top&bottom e.g. If you want 16:9 output but you have 4:3 clips included, then they will have the black space\bars on either size because you maintain the 4:3 ratio and pad out the remaining area\space.
Most modern video authoring packages should come with the ability to add text, titles and some fancy transitions between clips, and a multitude of advanced functions.


I use Filmora for my video editing. It's a paid version, I think the license was $79 a few years back. I think you can download the trial version which allows you to export the video but with their logo emblazoned over it - well, it used to. Having a play with it should give you an idea of the functionality and hopefully you can find a free editor which can do all the basic functions afterwards.

Apologies if this is teaching you to suck eggs. If it is not useful to you then maybe it useful to anyone else who is start to learn video editing.

I've been using Kdenlive the last two days with success!

By starting the project with an 848x480 video (for SD), it sets that aspect ratio for the whole thing I believe. So then 720x480p videos look fine too centered in the middle. This is basically what I wanted and has been easy enough with this software. Been able to render a good test video or two along the way as well.

For HD I might try to mix 720p and 1080p videos, so I'm not sure how that'll pan out... but yeah. Not making anything too fancy here. Just some simple cumpilations from all my rips and collection, that I can share here eventually too.

I´ve tried Filmora and it works pretty well. There is a free option but you´ll see a ugly watermark but there are tricks to disable it. Just look up Youtube Tutorials on that. Its pretty easy to handle and i also created Cumpilations with it.
