NHRA Revises 2020 Schedule, Shelves Countdown

By*ANDREW WOLF*MARCH 25, 2020

The National Hot Rod Association today announced its revised schedule and plan of attack in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The series, halted two weekends ago prior to the annual Gatornationals, will remain so until June 7, when the Mello Mello Drag Racing Series will return to Gainesville, Florida to complete the traditional East coast opener three months after it began.

In rearranging its schedule, the NHRA cancelled the spring Las Vegas race, moved the Charlotte Four-Wide event to the fall to replace the traditional two-wide Countdown race, along with Atlanta, Virginia, and Epping. The Mello Mello series will conduct two four-race stints to re-open the season. As well, six of the events will now feature the professional eliminators on Saturday and Sunday only, including Houston. Bristol, Norwalk, Seattle, Topeka, and Reading.

Perhaps most notably, given the reduction in total events from 24 to 19 and the overall scenario, the NHRA will forgo the six-race Countdown to the Championship in favor of a traditional total-points-amassed formula to decide its professional champions.

Official Statement on. behalf of the NHRA:

In consideration of the COVID-19 global pandemic, NHRA officials announced today revisions to the 2020 Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule. The series is tentatively planned to resume June 5-7 with the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway. The season will conclude with the crowning of the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series champions November 13-15 at the Auto Club Finals at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona.

The revised schedule will consist of 19 total events, with 17 of those events being contested when the series resumes in June. Six of these events will be condensed to two-day competition schedules for the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series classes due to economic and logistical factors. As a result of the compressed schedule points will not be reset after the U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway. NHRA has held two make-up dates on the calendar in case there are further delays.

Tentative schedule announcements for the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, E3 Spark Plugs NHRA Pro Mod Series, Mickey Thompson Tires NHRA Top Fuel Harley Series and Samtech.edu NHRA Factory Stock Showdown Series will be announced soon. All NHRA-sanctioned drag racing series competition is still suspended until further notice.

NHRA officials announced a 22-race 2021 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series schedule. Details on Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, and Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifying days as well as special exhibitions and specialty series that compete at national events will be announced in coming weeks.

NHRA enters 2021 with a new sponsor on its premier professional series – Camping World, the nation’s largest retailer of recreational vehicles (RVs), RV accessories, and RV-related services – and an extended partnership with FOX Sports including amped-up coverage. All 22 events in this extreme sport series will be aired exclusively on FOX Sports with select events on the FOX broadcast network.

In 2021 NHRA will celebrate its 70th anniversary. Fans will experience special treats and features along the tour to commemorate this important milestone and honor the NHRA’s vast history.*

“We are grateful to the loyal NHRA fans and other members of the racing community who have stuck with us during the trying times of the 2020 season,” said NHRA President Glen Cromwell. “We’re looking forward to an exciting season of championship drag racing with fans in 2021. Thank you to our fans, racers, track operators, and partners for your continued support and cooperation.”

For the first time, the NHRA season will kick off on the east coast with the 52nd annual AMALIE Motor Oil Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway on March 12-14.*

The traditional series opener, the 61st annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, will move to April 9-11 in 2021, starting a unique three-week spring stretch on the West Coast. The Winternationals will be followed by the DENSO Spark Plugs NHRA Four-Wide Nationals in Las Vegas, the first of two four-wide events during the 2021 campaign, and the NHRA Arizona Nationals in Phoenix, April 23-25.

NHRA’s famed Western Swing, the popular three-race summer tradition, includes thrilling events at Bandimere Speedway in Denver, Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., and Pacific Raceways in Seattle over consecutive weeks.

The sport’s biggest race, the historic NHRA U.S. Nationals, will stay in its traditional place over Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 1-5, at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.

NHRA’s Countdown to the Championship playoff system, with the top 10 racers in each professional category competing for a championship over the final six races, will lead into the 2021 season finale, the 56th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals slated for November 12-14 at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, Calif.*

One facility, Route 66 Raceway in Chicago, is not holding any drag racing events at its facility in 2021, so it is not included on the schedule.

Congrats to Angelle Sampey and team for being only the 6th person to ever hit 200mph on a motorcycle (in her class) last weekend in Florida. She was 2/100th off of the world record.

Life just keeps getting stranger and stranger...

I posted that funny car run earlier from my throwaway YouTube account but on my private account there I've been getting messages that without going into names yet, the jist of them is "if you want to put on an exhibition I'm in". I have gotten 5 so far, 3 Funny Car teams and 2 Top Fuel Teams.

Oh ya for context, I built a 1/4 mile race track on my property in Southern Alberta that could be brought to NHRA standards with a few modifications. It's used for street racing at the moment so speed demons can get their yayas out safely without speeding on public roads.

Here is that clip

And if it isn't strange enough yet, my girl Leah Pruett who is a Top Fuel Driver, is getting married to Tony Stewart of NASCAR fame. Tony was somewhat of a nemesis for my William... I guess I need to learn to like him lol.

NASCAR Hall of Famer Tony Stewart Engaged to Drag Racer Leah Pruett: 'Undeniable' Love

I had to laugh at the headline, "Undeniable" was one of William's usernames elsewhere and he foresaw this happening but I laughed it off, silly me lol.

It takes about 40 minutes to rebuild an 11000 horsepower top fuel engine, watch it done here in 7.

An engine will run you approximately 60,000 dollars and they are rebuilt after every run...

Remember the name Rachel Meyers who is destroying the Top Alcohol Dragster class. She opened the season with a win and won the 4 wides a couple weeks ago and won again after a rain delayed race in Houston last week.

Here is the entire progression including some brilliant onboard shots right to Rachel's win in the final

Torrence, Hight and Hartford win at NHRA’s SpringNationals

May 24, 2021

BAYTOWN, Texas (AP) — Texas-based Steve Torrence beat Doug Kalitta in the Top Fuel final on Monday at the rain-delayed Mopar Express Lane NHRA SpringNationals at Houston Raceway Park.

Torrence needed just a 4.00 to earn career win No. 43 after Kalitta’s Mobil 1/TRD dragster smoked the tires early. Torrence has lost just two rounds this season and has 14 round wins to extend his lead in the Camping World Top Fuel standings. It was his third win in the first five races of the season and first in Texas.

“I just think it’s unbelievable to have the success we’ve had this year and to win in Texas in front of our Capco crew and fans is even more special,” Torrence said. “We’ve run well here in the past, but we get to the final round and something always seems to happen. We’ve been snake-bit. I don’t know if I’ve had win repellant on me or what.”

Robert Hight, who raced just twice in 2020 and was sidelined in February due to the COVID-19 pandemic, defeated Ron Capps in the Funny Car final. Capps also smoked the tires on the NAPA Dodge while Hight laid down a solid 3.916 in his Camaro. The win was Hight’s first since the 2019 fall Charlotte event and 52nd overall.
