I use the cut at time feature in mkvmerge GUI. However the output will always be an mkv file using this program if it wasn't already. I don't mind that but I know some people like sticking to more common extensions like avi.

Thanks for the answer! I see..
As for me, I'm using wonderful soft wich allows to split and join videos, more over - output file type and size is always same as input. Who needs - can share it in pm. Or is it allowed to post links in this section? |

AviDemux, VirtualDub and MPEG Streamclip You are not allowed to post links to commercial sites or cracks. If the link is to freeware then it is not a problem. |

MPEG Streamclip is free, fast and gives you a good variety of file format options (ie: save to avi, mpeg etc).

4Media Video Editor 2, I haver never used it, but for the next 24hrs the program is available for a free download
* Join a few videos together, even in different formats, to compose a new video file; * Cut video clips freely to retain the necessary parts in a video file; * Split one video file into several segments to get the proper length for actual need; * Built-in media player can provide a real-time preview on the original videos as well as the output after editing; * Apply fade-in or fade-out effect between video segments to enrich the output when merging several video together; * You can clip more than one clip for one source video and output all the clips as one video file http://giveawayoftheday.com/4media-video-editor-2/ |

I also tried cutting a 25 minute section from a large video using the Keep Original Format option. It took about 4 minutes to produce the clip, so it would appear to me that it is reencoding when it clips, rather than making a direct stream copy, which would normally be much faster. Having said there appears to be no difference in the quality from the original to the clip. It also allows for converting to a wide range of video formats which is interesting. Anyway, it's not too bad for a freebie, though I will probably stick with Avidemux & VirtualDub when it comes to reencoding. |
