PC repair in the age of pr0n
i basically view PCs [laptops] as disposable -- i use them till they drop, then throw them out in one piece**. way too private to want any technician so much as TOUCHING the things.
exception was few years back when machine of the time wouldn't boot and i was faced with losing my entire life (no backups). no choice but to have an expert pluck out most of my files for xfer to replacement PC. this time around i may need a minor hardware fix (dead fan). am i just to ASSUME that technician will see every last file i have? nothing illegal in there (kids/donkeys), but still. i'm just EMBARRASSED to have the guy noting my PC is full of pr0n, even adult/hetero stuff. this is a small town! is there a way to lock technician OUT of all my files w/o hindering his ability to do hardware repair? i never gave him my WINDOWS pw last time around, yet that didn't seem to hinder him in the least from accessing all the FILES on the PC! so what's the point of the master login? i know i can lock/encrypt indiv folders/files, but still. i'm equally uncomfortable having him snoop around my banking or even correspondence folders. too much stuff to "offload it all" and hand him the PC blank. so don't bother suggesting that. TIA! ----- ** actually in multiple pieces. i dice, slice, and burn things before they go out; esp the hard drive. |

sure. remove your hard drive.
you dont need a drive to turn on the system or test a fan. if it aint in the system you cant access it.

it's a laptop -- isn't removing hard drive way trickier than removing a fan?
plus chance of mucking up / blanking out drive? real novice here, recall! |

In the words of my, now deceased, PC tech support:
"We don't give a fuck what's on your hard drive". If your PC isn't screaming 'here's my porn collection' on the desktop when they boot it up, they aren't going to go looking for it - time is after all, money, and they could be earning some while 'perusing your system.' When that guy in the past 'did a transfer' he probably didn't look at your files either - unless he needed to find something specific, he'd have bulk copied it. |

If you're current laptop is configured for two hard drives you could add a second hard drive and keep all your data files (including banking, correspondance, browser history & cache etc) on that drive, and reserve the system drive strictly for your operating system. If your laptop isn't configured for two hard drives you can still add a second drive if you're prepared to lose the DVD drive. There's loads of YouTube tutorials on how to do it, and it's not that difficult.
When the time comes to have your laptop serviced you can just remove the drive with all your data. Or if your version of Windows supports it you can BitLocker to encrypt your data drive. Personally I like to encrypt all my really important personal info on an encrypted drive so that I am fully protected in the event my machine is stolen. |

meh, we mostly just cruised the hot girls comps when they wanted them fixed.
most of our time was spent reading peoples groupwise email accounts to see who was screwing who. We did swipe a lot of movies from hdds back when divx was new and movie piracy was rampant, but only if we didnt already have them. Oh, and cruise peoples porn. Handing your system to a couple of unknown geeks is just SLIGHTLY less stupid than uploading all your shit to a BUNCH of geeks in the cloud. Wouldnt it be cool to be the DHS guys who monitor cell phones? Ah, the stories they must have. "So, over the weekend, Miley's cell phone went dark. We were worried until we figured out it was stuck up her ass. Phil has the video...."

You may well have a 'duty to report,' however, 'duty to report' is not the same thing as 'go actively looking for' - you find it while you go 'searching' and as you stated 'you can also be cautioned for viewing it' - so the best course of action is, unless you have a genuine reason to go looking for something - don't. |
