How do I rename a video file?
I downloaded a divx video file of the film Champagne for Caesar. I can't burn it to a dvd because ConvertXtoDVD does not recognize it. In Windows Explorer, when I put the cursor over the folder it is in, I receive the message "folder is empty". I think this is because the video file has a name over fifty characters long. When I right click on the file to rename it none of the options allow me to rename it. I tried highlighting the file and then clicking File then Rename. But nothing happens. How do I rename this file so I can use it? I'm using Windows XP.
Thanks! |

Try opening it with Mpeg Streamclip. If it opens in that program, export it to a different format and give it a new name.
You will then be able to burn it to DVD.

Try to see in File Properties, in attributes, if read only option ticked, un-ticked it.
And you said in windows explorer, folder is empty, when you downloaded it, is it in Rar / Zip, are you sure it's clean download, the file not corrupted...?

Use the free Format Factory to change format.

Download gspot (headbands.com/gspot/) and use this to identify what the file is. Thats the first and foremost important thing. If its not being recognised then this will help you find out what file type it is.
If your still stuck with renaming you could do it via your command prompt although this is tricky. Read Only files can still be renamed so the fact that you cannot rename it sounds odd. The fact that you cannot even get a prompt up to rename it is even more odd. If all else fails try opening a program that allows you to load something up. Even photoshop for example. Set the open to "all files", go to the folder and then right click and rename that way. Only on a very old version of windows would you struggle with a filename over 8 characters in length. Newer versions of windows allow for files names up to 128 characters in length. |
