How to zip files into smaller parts?

Can somebody advise on what's the best way to zip files into split archives?

I've tried using the compress function from the right click drop down menu directly on the file I want to split. I've also tried the archive manager and both seem to take for ever. I used to use winrar or 7zip when I was using windows and it seemed way quicker.

The thing that's bothering me is, that they don't look like the files that I download from other people. Is there a rar file program for linux that can split files. I can zip files, but there's no split files option as it's blanked out in zip mode. So where is or how do I rar files, because they are by far the most common shared formats. Anyway here's a picture of the split files in 7z format. Will people using other operating systems be able to use them?

There is a rar utitility for Linux, but it is commandline-only and costs 30 bucks: http://rarlabs.com/shop2rarlab.php?prod=linux

Probably, provided they have hjsplit and 7zip installed. From the screenshot it looks your archiver uses the same convention to split files as hjsplit does, but you might want to test that first. Hjsplit can be found on http://hjsplit.org/, but I have never used it myself since it is not needed to join files - the standard cat program already does that.
