snagging pix/vids from socials
how do i isolate a URL for IG or tiktok? in some cases the latter offers "open in new window", in which case it is easy. but not always. and the former (IG) never does.
lot of sites disable right-click, but u can still find the URLs in the page source. but for IG & tiktok, the code is so convoluted with recursive subroutines, i just can't work out what those URLs are. at one point someone here also taught me a trick involving some rt-click popup with "identify media" or the like under some tab. looked like the "properties" popup in explorer, frankly, but how would that relate to anything on a webpage? worked great for years, btw, but i can't for the life of me remember what it was, or how to invoke it! tx! PS: no need to address FB -- things quite easy to isolate/DL there. |

There's an instagram picture downloader on the web, can't link it here but Google will find it for you.

TikTok - For Android, there's an app called TikTok Save that let's you d/l media from TikTok, by copying/pasting urls for download.
IG - On Windows, on a page were you find media, you can right-click, then click "save as". Wait for the download to fully complete, then look in the downloaded folder for your selected media. |

my OP makes clear that tiktok sometimes has this option; IG never does. maybe it's just me, but plenty of discussions on other tech boards (i have since done a deep dive) claim likewise. more detes to follow.... |

ok...tx for the online DLer recommendations. they work fine but it feels like cheating. and i'm none the wiser why the URLs in page source don't work!
did some fishing. turns out (IG case first), they did work until 2019, when the site started messing up the URLs. first by changing all the slashes to "\/", later by changing the ampersands to "\u0026". both have since changed; apparently nowadays they just change the ampersands to "&". so hand-swapping all the "&"s back to "&" produces the correct URL. or so they claim ("as of jan 2023"). but not for me. i dunno what i'm doing wrong. i tweak the ampersands, i swap out the ampersands, i delete the ampersands, it makes no diff. still "bad URL hash". back to basics, the way to find out the URLs actually being used is via "inspect >> source". u go thru the *cloud* icons there (those boards claim there will be "one"; i get 5!), and one will have a subfolder "v", with 2 further subfolders -- one with the image in question; one with all peripheral images (commenter's profile pix, etc). so, altogether, that's "inspect >> source >> cloud icon (fish thru) >> v >> subfolders >> URLs" THOSE urls work fine -- finally! -- and can even be "open[ed] in new tab" via rt-click there. i must say, tho, they are QUITE a bit diff in my case from the page source URLs; way more than just ampersand tweaks, there are various tags which are present/missing/diff as well. so i'm still kinda in the dark as to how this is all happening. ----- tiktok: can do likewise (inspect >> source >> ...), but i never quite got around to it b/c the 2 vids i was struggling to DL suddenly had "save as" and "open in new tab" UNGREY themselves! what the...?! have loaded those URLs like 100 times apiece now. sometimes via "refresh", sometimes via backarrow from diff URL i had moved on to, sometimes via fresh cut/paste; one in about 20 times apiece, the rt-click options show up. or maybe one in 40: 3 vids i been struggling with. call them A B and C. A *always* has "save as" / "open in new tab" avail. B suddenly had it avail around load 20 C still did not, even when B did so, but ended up doing itself like 20 loads later 1-2 attempts later, both B and C went back to being greyed out. i'm still scratching my head. but i snagged the vids and the URLs during their brief windows of availability. any theories? |

I don't have a solution, but I noticed something with IG. Inspect works for me no problem for stories if there's nothing but a video. The URL is easy enough to find in these situations.
However, the video becomes a Blob if there is something else on top of the video (i.e. text or a poll). I have not looked into whether the blobs can be download and converted. |
