I sometimes think that his Les Paul was possessed or something, cause no other LP or any other player had a better tone than him with those guitars. So many replicas have been made, and they can sound similar but none of them ever match the sound accurately. I once seen a guitar player describe the neck pickup sound of Green's guitar as 'heaven' and I agree. Much is made of the famous out of phase middle position sound, but his neck pickup was where he stayed most of the time and no other LP player ever had a tone that sounded so gorgeous with it. I seriously think Green at the top of his game was probably the best guitar player on the planet at the time. He could've and arguably should've went down as the best guitar player to ever come out of Britain. If you haven't heard the Boston Tea Party live album, that's the best Fleetwood Mac ever sounded. That was going to be their latest album in 1970 before he quit the band. That solo is one of the most haunting things I've ever heard with those high notes. You can hear someone's inner demons coming out on that. The entire Boston Tea Party album is amazing. It has Jumping At Shadows on there, the absolute best version of Black Magic Woman, and there's a 20 minute jam version of Rattlesnake Shake with the instrumental Underway in there, that sounds like the Grateful Dead meets Blues meets some other bizarre element never heard before. Green is one of the very few guitar players who has played notes that can invoke fear in me (as well as an array of other emotions including sadness and happiness). Just listen to the solo in 'Got A Mind To Give Up Living' from the New Orleans 1970 show. That is one of the most terrifying things I have ever heard. It begins with someone's soul that sounds like it's crying, then he just launches into a fury of notes, slows down and goes off again. First time I ever heard that solo, it send chills up my spine and scared the living hell out of me. EDIT: Here it is, I just had to include this and share it too. If you haven't heard it, I wanted to share it for someone. I drive my girlfriend nuts talking about Peter Green but he brings me so much joy, if I can get others to listen to him, I always feel good. It's a shame he is obscure today and not known by more. This solo should be in the lists of best ever.
