Laptop crashing Help needed
My laptop powers up then crashes after 2secs - 1min,
or sometimes before windows even loads. i think it is a hardware problem. i want to get it repaired but its full of porn, music and personal info(financial medical,personal...stuff that i dont want some arsehole getting hold of). you need a password to get into the c drive where all my data is but otherwise nothing is encrypted. What should i do? can i trust my local repair shop ? i have access to central london btw. there is important data i need(porn and music can be replaced) should i buy new laptop and ask them to put in hard drive from my current laptop? Suggestions please. |

Hi jumper8
There is a troubleshooting guide for that type of issue here: Code:
http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Lockups-Freezes-Hangs/Laptop-powers-up-then-after-a-few-seconds-powers-off/td-p/574883 If so you could put it into a caddy and remove the potentially embarrasing information. Personally I wouldn't go for the "buy new laptop and change drive" option, you are still getting someone else to move the stuff around. 1: You have a perfectly good drive gone to waste. 2: If they are going to move the drive, someone will have to look at it. In which case you may as well take it to someone and get them to have a look at the current laptop. I'm sure you won't be the first or last person to have an expert investigate things you would prefer not to be seen on your computer (damn you Firefox, keeping random bookmarks ). |

1. A friend who can download & burn an ISO CD of Linuxmint or Ubuntu. 2. An external HD Load the CD & re-boot the Laptop. It will load slowly because the computer has to read the CD then dump the info into memory then go back and get more info from the CD. When fully loaded, select "demo" and navigate to your data folders. You can the cut & transfer your data from the Laptop onto an external HD. ALWAYS back up your valuable data, weekly or more frequently depending on your downloads. I use Karen's Replicator. Neanderthal simple to use. Cheers, |

You could just ask the technician to take out the hard drive from your laptop first and give it to you before they do any repairs. Just tell them that it has allot of confidential data on there and you need it for work. The technician will probably put a spare drive he has laying around into your laptop once he has repaired it to test that it's working again.

No, you won't need to remove the RAM. Think of RAM as Window's workspace - it is loaded into RAM when the machine is turned on. When the machine is turned off, everything in RAM is lost, hence the need for permanent storage (your hard drive).
In fact, it's probably best to leave the RAM in anyway so that it can be tested. |

mine is due for a reinstall. as I keep getting a IRQL_GT_ZERO_AT_SYSTEM_SERVICE
USUALLY DURING FIRST BOOT IF i MOVE THE MOUSE AT ALL. BSOD. but it still comes up on random smh I've been told it's a driver.... sigh... it doesn't happen enough to be a major annoyance though. could be Bitdefender. It mucks up my Steam Client. unless you take your computer to Geek Squad. should be able to trust things. Geek Squad is more like the Porn Squad and they hardly fix anything....

Jumper, I fix computers and your problem reminds me of a guy who sent his in once. You would turn it on and then it would turn off. Sometimes it lasted seconds, sometimes minutes.
The answer turned out to be the cpu fan. There was actually nothing wrong with it. It was just dirty. It had like a mini hairball inside that would not allow the fan to spin. The computer overheats and turns itself off, so it won't do further damage. After cleaning it, the computer worked normally. Checked the hard drive, memory, ect... Nothing wrong with it. You might want to hit youtube and enter your model number. It might show you how to take it apart if you've never done it before. Of course, there might be something else wrong. But this just reminded me of that issue. |
