Windows Save Feature
Normally I click a link for a downloadable file and Windows takes it and puts said file into the Downloads Folder. ABC123

Once in a while a file will be compressed into a few parts, for this question's sake into .001 .002 files... I will click on it, Windows asks what to do with the file, but the "do it next time for same file type" or whatever option is not available. How do I get those to just save the preference? |

Are you entering the URL into a Win File Manager window or a web browser?
All files should be saved to a default folder unless changed to "Ask Me Every Time". You are being asked that question because the filetype is not registered in your Registry as a recognized filetype. For instance, a .001 is not a RAR filetype. The only program I know that uses those is HJSplit. This simple program does not go into the registry by default and set associations with this filetype.

I use 7zip and it works great to extract compressed archives split into several parts without having to associate anything.
Simply save all parts in the same folder, right-click on the one with .001 ext, move your mouse on "7zip" and select "extract here". Another thing. If you open 7zip, you can go into Tools > Options. You should see "001" among the extensions and you can associate it with 7zip from there. |

If you look in you registry to see the file extensions and what they are associated with, then you will find .001 file but not 002, 003....
That is unless you have installed a program that registered it. As a result, Windows does not know what to do with it except for download it. It has no idea how to open it. It cannot give you a choice. |

It occurs when I attempt to download any file, in a regular web browser, with those extensions. I understand that Windows wouldn't know to automatically download it (or any other option) the first time a file with whatever extension is encountered. However, with these particular "numbered" extensions, I am asked what to do with it every time, and the checkbox that says "do this from now on" is grayed out. I can't choose to download it automatically. It isn't a big hassle, more of a curiosity why Windows would allow you to choose a permanent option for every other file type I have come across with the exception of the numbered extensions.

I don't think you can save the preference. It's happened to me many times. I've just had to do it manually. If anyone knows the answer I would like to know this too.

Saving, from a browser, is a function of the browser, not Windows.
If you try to open a file, if Windows doesn't know how to open it, you will get prompted to choose a program to open it with (and the option to remember). Am I missing something? |

Yes. The option to remember is grayed out and unable to be checked, but just for file extensions that use the three digits, but NOT for .001 (for whatever reason the option to remember worked just fine). So "filename.002", "filename.003" and so on prompts the box to pop up asking what to do with the file.
Again, just a minor annoyance, if that. I was just curious why such was the case. |
