usb file copy problem
Hi Guys I have a problem at the moment, if I download a mp3 album to my hard drive and then copy it to my pendrive so I can listen in the car, the folder is being copied but the files aren't, I can see and play the files from the usb stick on my pc but as soon as I unplug it only the folder is visible to the car stereo none of the files appear to be there, any ideas? All of the folders i copied earlier are there as are their files and play ok??

Just a thought, but try copying just the mp3 files onto your pendrive and not the folder that contains them.

A longshot, as I'm not familiar with USB inputs in car stereos, but double check the individual mp3s... make sure they're the correct size and more importantly (if applicable), ensure that the encoder used for the mp3s are something your car stereo doesn't choke on. i.e. - a LAME decoder is pretty universal, but encoders like Fraunhofer or FFMpeg might not be palatable for your car's sound system, even though they'll play just fine on your computer, since the 'puter typically has lots of codecs... maybe I'm wrong, but that's what I would look at first.

I think Lonewolf is right.
Check the files and make sure they are true MP3 and not renamed MP4As or WMAs or some other format. Some MP3 formats are proprietary and may not work on standard MP3 standalone players.

If you have successfully copied and played files before, then my guess is that it's a size issue, not a format issue. I had a this problem. I bought a 64GB USB thumb drive thinking I could copy a chunk of my music on there and I'd never have to use my CD's again. The problem is, my aftermarket stereo will only read up to 12GB. Anything after that 12GB (or whatever yours is rated for) and my stereo will ignore it. I only found this out after I spent extra cash for a bigger USB thumb drive. Google your stereo's manufacturer and they might say how much it will read from the USB. Another easy diagnosis is to simply remove all music from the USB, then put the mp3's that won't play onto the USB. Or you could use a spare empty USB that's formatted correctly; Fat32 (I think), then put the mp3's that won't play onto the USB. If they play, it's a size issue. I believe the only other thing it could be, is you have too many folders on the USB. I read that somewhere when I was trying to figure out my issue. Using an empty USB (formatted correctly) with previously unplayable mp3's loaded onto it will diagnose that too.
Hope that helps, good luck.

Test in another computer. That will rule out your "file not being there" theory.
Assuming the files are actually there, as noted above, they are in a format not supported by the car player. Could be too many nested folder, long file names, type of characters used in the file name. or the actual file format. You should be able to open the file(s) using MediaInfo to pull the file specs. |
