Default Has anyone installed a 3TB data drive under Windows 7

I am getting ready to buy a 3TB or a 4TB drive

I am going to use it as my D: data drive under Windows 7 32bit.

I boot up using a 500 gig C drive.

I have heard there are some technical issues with drives above 2.2 TB.

I don't want to use any work arounds etc.

Has anyone installed a 3 or 4 TB drive using Windows 7 32 bit out of the box ?

Sorry buddy, I'm on 2Tb drives (3 of them) but no problems encountered - running Win 7 64bit. Best I can suggest is that you check the system requirements of any drive you are thinking of purchasing.

Good luck.

Edit

ummmm

This article might explain some of the technical issue you might encounter.

The "technical issue" here is that the traditional disk partitioning scheme that has been used since the 1980's does not allow addressing larger disks, so a different one is necessary, commonly known as GPT. 32-bit Windows 7 supports reading from and writing to GPT partitioned disks, but not booting from them, which is why you need to keep your current hard drive as boot disk.

I haven't, but as a secondary hard disk there should be no problems. On Windows XP, that would be a different story.

I had problems with mine which was connected via a USB caddy, and you should not have problems if you are using a USB caddy.

Two things matter to you:
One: does the OS support 3TB?
Two: do the Motherboard and BIOS support 3TB?
If my experience is anything to go by it appears that quite often you can only be sure if it works once you have installed it and set it to GPT. Mine was fixed by changing the caddy.

think I'll run the other direction on USB 3.0 nothing but problems. Dell might say they support it. yea maybe if the cable is a foot long. Otherwise useless.

no problem with my Vantec.. esata which the OS treats as an internal drive. so it's always very fast. USB 3 out way ahead of its time.

I've two running on Windows 7 and Linux through USB2 and SATA without any issues.
You must install it using GPT.
If you run an old operating systems you may have problems. On the other hand manufacturers of HD have tools prevent them. Check their web if you aren't sure.

we use external 3TB and 4TB Seagate BackuPlus drives

our brand preference, they are also USB 3.0 and other connection
types are possible, also handles both PC and MAC

when we connect, we use a Belkin powered USB Hub, and have
never had any problems

the key we think here is the Hub is powered, not just a simple connect

have a feeling thats where the problem lies most of the time.. this is USB 3.0 user friendly. not without knowing what USB 3.0 does or capable of. Because 3 foot cable will not run from the Toshiba 3.0 to the computer. (Hitachi drive inside oddly enuf even though Toshiba Merged with Fujitsu drives) Nevermind trying to figure out how to take that sucker apart. probably destroy it finding out)

spent $20 on a USB 3.0 cable make no difference. Runs just fine to a USB 2.0 port though. But 3 no.

The other thing though.. from a technical standpoint there is a slight not of slowness when convereting a Sata drive to usb 2 or 3. there isn't form sata to esata. Big problem is most docking stations are not 6.0 gb/s nor are the drives.
