Logitech speakers are generally very good for PCs. At least, that's my preference.
I'd recommend Logitech Z906 500W 5.1 Speakers. They cost $340. Here's a review.

Whatever you decide to buy, I'd suggest you check out the product in your local store but buy online. Amazon is a good place to search for best prices.

Oh I usually go in great depth researching a product when I plan to purchase. Drive myself to distraction with it , hence the question here too . But I'd have to hear the speakers in person first. I'm tending towards 2.1 this time - I figure they`d have better quality sound then 5.1 at the same price or a sound bar with sub woofer but I could be wrong. Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm partially deaf, so the $10 speakers work just fine for me.

Depends on exactly what you want and/or expect. While you can obviously get a higher quality 2.1 system for the same cash as a 5.1 system, you won't have surround sound. So it all depends on what you want out of the system.
For a 2.1 system, I wouldn't go with a computer surround system. I'd get a pair of bookshelf speakers, a sub, and a small amp. |

From personal experience, not logitech as everything I had from them break easy and/or and sounds like utter shite.

Logitech speakers are fullrange with NO tweeters, weak mids, and boomy overpowered 1 note bass from the sub. For that kind of money get yourself what I have: Reloop ADM-5 active DJ monitors( active speakers the size of bookshelf hifi speakers) and they sound AMAZING!!! And only cost me £125 a pair just over a year ago, they are pretty bass heavy, sound hifi and go very LOUD(up to about 100dbA) cleanly before they start to distort, but whole wants 100dbA near their face, they would go deaf eventually, but have a sub out input if you want even more bass. Perfect for a house party when up VERY LOUD and you are a good 1m or so away from them. Then if you want house shaking bass, get yourself a hifi or studio active subwoofer to go with them. You can easily get cheap active home subwoofers nowadays. Basically what they look like, not my video though...: I'll be uploading a video of mine playing shortly soon and doing some bass tests to the limit with some of the most bass heavy music I play. |

it also depends on where you can instal the sound system in the room. If you do not have enough places or too much furniture then use 2.1 otherwise there is not that much difference if the audio/video file do not have 5.1 sound
