DVD ripping/saving/"shrinking" help needed
Hello All -
Thanks for all your useful links re: screen caps w Image Grabber and Virtual Dub for editing scenes - very easy to use - THANKS!! Now, are there any other tutorial posts about ripping DVDs? Here is my prob - I have searched all the forums and google and I have the following tools: Gordian Knot, DVD Shrink & Nero 8. I am buying/renting DVDs to post here but I rip the DVD files and they are HUGE (like 4.5GB per 90 min movie) I can't understand how most 2 hr movies I have grabbed off torrent sites or here are usually like 700MB. Also, when I rip I get a folder w all the .VOB parts etc and to playback after a burn I have to OPEN the folder and "play"/open each .VOB file. I want to be able to rip a DVD that just plays back once like a movie would normally playback. Do you have any suggestions? Anyways, any ideas on how to: 1) Get the files smaller 2) "Join" them or create a single playback file and not just copy/rip the contents? Thanks paskel Please email me or post the links here if there are also tutorials thank you!! |

once you have the vobs in your hard disc , it's easy with nero recode.
Choose "recode main movie to nero digital" chose "import" and drop the folder where the ripped dvd is. Select audio and video compression and you can also pick target size. For example 1CD, 2CDs etc. nero recode has the nero AVC encoder which is very good and produces good quality and not huge files. You can play around with the other options too You can pick 1 - pass (faster) or 2 -pass (slower, but better encoding), then "burn" , and the encoding starts. It's a long process and depending on your PC it can take many hours. You will end up with a good quality .mp4 file playable by nero showtime or VLC player Then you 'll have to split it and upload it Auto Gordian Knot is a good -free- alternative, a bit more complicated though.

AutoGK is pretty good too. It's a vehicle basically for all these apps that run underneath.

ok..i am back..what a mess!
I am ripping w NERO recode and converting w GK is that correct? Anways, I didn't want to lose quality so I chose high % quality settings on GK and the files of a 4-5GB movie took about 14 hrs to complete. I then lowered to 50% and I got a choppy picture. ** I only just now discovered the 1-2 CD pulldown options (700 MB, 1400 etc) IS there a way to bypass the 2nd pass? The 1st pass of my 1st VOB took 1:10 - the film I am doing is 4 parts so wil roughly take 4-5 hrs. However, the 2nd pass is taking just as long - should it be taking 10 hrs to do a movie?? Thanks for all replies, but I didn't check back immed as I was still in trial and error process. I have the GK tutorial printed out in front of me. |

** I noticed in the log, that the "expected quality %" of the 1st VOB job when done was 58%. I read in the tutorial that custom quality % settings only use 1 pass instead of 2.

Since the 700 MB/ 1 CD option was giving me 58%, I am going to do a custom 58% and see how much faster it is. Stand by Any helpful hints GLADLY accepted - I am getting a bit more familiar w this now - How long should a 2 HR (5 GB ) movie take to convert w 3 GB memory? |

Just a note if you will post full movies here.
Movies which are produced AFTER 07/1995 are forbidden on this forum ! I will hope your effort was not for nothing now. |

thanks Toto -
I am 42 yo. I have no interest in porn made after 1995 (well a little) but yes I realize this is a vintage forum - If you notice my avatar is Nikki Dial - I am working on some Nikki titles (all are 1992-1995) |

I use AOA DVD ripper. It encodes as it rips so you will get small file size quickly. Full movies can be under 400 mb if you use wmv as the output. It will also just rip chapters or you choice the the times to select just a scene. If you want the program, pm me for the info.

My message was written on the assumption that you already have the movie ripped ( that means the VOBs on your hard disk ) Once you are done with that, proceed...and use EITHER nero recode OR AutoGK, DO NOT use both at the same time and consecutively. These 2 applications are doing the same job, so try them to see which one you like best and stay with one of them. No reason to compress the same film twice , by passing it through nero recode first and autogk after wards.
