You need to create a .gif file that is 10x10 pixels. Title it favicon.ico, then save it to the same directory your primary web page stored. Between the <head> and </head> tags in the HTML code for your page, put <LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="favicon.ico">.

When I renamed the gif 'favicon.ico' it didn't work, but when I did this...

It DID work. Is this normal?

You need to create a ico file. I use a program called XnView; its free! Create your image file that you want to use as the favicon.ico, open it in XnView and save it as favicon.ico. It will automatically convert it for you. Make sure that you resize the image file you are using to the smallest size that still gives you the clarity you want before converting it to favicon.ico. Browsers resize favicon.ico automatically; just make sure that your favicon.ico file is less than 6kb.

Whether 'bb.gif' works probably depends on which browser you were using to look at your web page, because some browsers are more forgiving than others about file extensions.

Do a Google search for the term "online favicon generator." Use one of the web pages to change the .gif image into an .ico image. I recommend naming it favicon.ico rather than bb.ico.

Using 'favicon.ico' will ensure your web site's icon is displayed across the greatest range of web browsers.

But it works in Firefox. I can't seem to see any icons for any website in Explorer.

Some times it takes a while or a restart is required.

I use Irfanview for all types of images conversions. Its free, less in size and faster than many other.
