Free CAD Programs
I'm looking around for a free CAD program. There seems to be a number out there after Googling. Just wondering if anyone has any experience using free CAD programs. The one thing I need is to be able to open and work on drawings created in AutoCad.
Any input appreciated. |

For the past 10 years I've been using a 14 day trial CAD software program.
1. Make an image of your c:\ drive with say, Acronis True Image (check for other good brands of Image Software) & copy the image to your d:\ drive (where you store or should store all your data.) The Operating System & Programs reside on c:\ drive. All your data is stored on d:\drive 2. Install any type of software on your c:\ drive (pirated/hacked/whatever) and use it until it expires or Wundoze fails. 3. Copy the image back to your c:\ drive from d:\ drive (Even if wundoze is truly rooted, you can still boot-up with a CD made with Acronis.) 4. Re-install & use the (pirated/hacked/whatever) software as you did before. 5. Repeat this function as necessary. Rinse & repeat. Rinse & repeat. It takes about 10 minutes to completely copy the image of your c:\ drive to your d:\ drive and about the same to copy the image back to your c:\ drive from d:\ drive You only purchase Acronis once. BSD's, viruses and shitty registry problems are avoided and you can transfer your system to a new computer when necessary. If you don't know about partitioning hard drives, google is your friend. My current box is a 64bit gaming unit running Win7-64. I also back-up my d:\ drive to an external hard drive for added security. Hard Drives are no longer expensive, so you should be fail-safe. |

I have just DLed DraftSight. It is free and lets me open and edit all my old .dwg files which is the main thing I wanted. I haven't had a chance to test it in any depth, but it seems to be just what I wanted. I don't think it does 3D modelling, but that's OK as I don't need that. |

You can also try Google SketchUp. It's free and runs in almost any computer.

1. Disable Internet connection. 2. Install Autocad 3. Enter serial when prompted 4 Open the hosts file in notepad(C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\) and enter the flowing line at the bottom - 127.0.0.1 67.202.218.145 #[Autodesk License Check] This will stop the program from calling home to check your serial. Works for me. If only I could just figure out how to use the damn thing. My artistic ability is nonexistent.

No artistic ability required. It is a heavy duty program and isn't all that intuitive. You really need a bit of instruction or tutoring to use even the basics efficiently.

Thanks yassar for the kind offer. For the moment I'll decline. Mainly because the freeware that I found is working very nicely at the moment. And you know what they say - the best things in life are for free

Especially to get a chair to twist and turn. That was where I learned to find other easier programs, but the other programs did not deal with 3-D. It sucked trying to determine the points that I needed to delete to make a design work mainly because I went to school to be a designer, yet the professional employees were doing my job and without any hassle from the boss. If I messed up, they would not let me hear the end of it. I should have been doing their work and they should have been the temps.
