I use xTorrent for my torrent downloads.
There is a free version, but it throttles your download speed after 1 hour so I took out a premium membership with unlimited lifetime upgrades for US$26.00 back in 2007 (Now that lifetime option is $40.00) and it's still going strong. The trouble is, that I don't really get to download as many torrents as I used to since the two main porn torrent sites shut down a while ago. But I still do use it for a great many different files. I have also heard that many trackers have cut out xTorrent, so that it isn't as good as it used to be. I have however read good things about Transmission, a free ("It doesn't hold some feaures back for a payware version."), open source torrent client: I suggest you try this one out first. Let us know how you get along!

I use qBittorrent on windows 7, it also supports (Linux, Mac OS X, OS/2, FreeBSD).

I'm on Linux, but Transmission works good enough here. This one started out rather slow yesterday but is running good now.

I use Vuze, on both osx and windows, I have some sort of a solid feeling using it, its somehow more reliable for me using vuze instead of other clients, but you should try out for yourself.
