SS#, when buying phone?
I want to buy an iphone 8 outright from the Apple store at my mall; No payment plan etc. Not interested in Itunes, just an iphone and an ipad.
I have been searching and asking people and it seems that Apple has asked them for their ss#? Please tell your experience at Apple Store when buying an iphone, paying in full at time of purchase; did they ask for you ss# and if so how do they justify that. Maybe it is so they can setup ATT account or access ATT account to activate phone? It seems though they would just ask for last 4 digits? I hate SS#'s, and I hate giving SS# when unwarranted but I also want an iphone 8 tomorrow! Thanks |

Why not buy it on Amazon? Apple sell their phones there too.
You will still need an Apple account to get apps from the Apple Store, and to receive system updates.

Therefore I have to guess that this is some kind of foreign (probably American) thing, I was never asked for my National Insurance, or National Health Service number for iPhone SE or iPad - presumably because our credit checks are based around the electoral roll.

I will not use their service or products.
It wouldn't surprise me a single bit if they were asking for personal information such as a Social Security #. I don't believe you have to be a American Citizen with a SS# to buy a phone. What they are probably doing is using it for credit checks and background checks. It sounds ridiculous but they are not interested in your privacy no matter how much bullshit they talk about "encryption". It's called a diversion. Rotten Apple!

I don't see why anyone would be asked for it when they are trying paying upfront for the whole cost of an unlocked iPhone, with no provider contract attached. When taking out a provider contract, then the company will ask for various ways of ensuring that they have the right identity, address, and credit rating of the applicant. These vary from country to country, but here in the UK it usually involves stuff like sending in a copy of utility bills taken out in the name of the applicant as well as a recent bank statement.
