Ruby Rose Is The CW's Live-Action Batwoman
gizmodo.com
James Whitbrook Aug 7, 2018 The CW has apparently found its Batwoman: Ruby Rose is heading to Gotham City. Both Variety and Deadline report that Rose, currently appearing in the giant-shark action movie The Meg, has been tapped to portray Kate Kane in both the upcoming Arrow/Flash/Supergirl/Legends of Tomorrow crossover special and the potential Batwoman series being helmed by Caroline Dries that could air in 2019. Rose, also known for turns in Orange Is the New Black and appearances in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter and John Wick: Chapter 2, will first appear in the role later this year. The heroes of the CW’s other DC supershows (sans Black Lightning, off in its own universe) will head to Gotham City for the first time, where they’ll team up with Kate Kane—one of DC Comics’ few lesbian characters—for a new adventure. Should the Batwoman standalone series go ahead next year, it will see Rose (who is part of the LGBTQ+ community) return to the role, operating on her own in Gotham as “a highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence,” according to a previously released synopsis. Previous details confirmed that the CW’s Batwoman would be an out lesbian, making a huge step for LGBTQ representation in the CW’s crop of DC TV shows, following in the footsteps of the likes of Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow’s bisexual character Sara Lance, and the Ray, the openly gay superhero who appeared in both a standalone CW animated series and the most recent crossover special, Crisis on Earth-X. The now-traditional four-show crossover is set to air this December. |

Ruby Rose quits Twitter after backlash over ‘Batwoman’ casting
pagesix.com By Tyler McCarthy August 12, 2018 | 4:00pm Actress Ruby Rose has deleted her Twitter account following backlash over the announcement that she’ll play the first lesbian superhero to headline a TV show in “Batwoman.” As previously reported, “The Meg” star was recently cast as Batwoman (A.K.A. Kate Kane) in The CW’s ongoing DC Comics TV universe. The star got emotional during an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” in discussing the role and what it means for inclusion in Hollywood. “I feel like the reason I get so emotional, growing up watching TV, I never saw somebody on TV that I could identify with, let alone a superhero,” Rose said through a cracking voice. “I have always had this saying — I mean, not me, Oscar Wilde — which is be yourself because everyone else is taken. So I always live by that motto, and the second motto when I came into the industry was be the person that you needed when you were younger. I feel like one motto led to another.” However, it seems Rose has joined the likes of “Stranger Things” star Millie Bobby Brown and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” actress Kelly Marie Tran in deleting social media accounts rather than withstanding the onslaught of negativity from online detractors. As Syfy notes, Rose’s final tweet before shutting down her Twitter saw her lament the fact that people were saying she can’t play a lesbian character because she is not a lesbian. Rose, however, has identified as a lesbian since she was a child. “Where on earth did ‘Ruby is not a lesbian therefore she can’t be batwoman’ come from – has to be the funniest most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read. I came out at 12? And have for the past 5 years had to deal with ‘she’s too gay’ how do y’all flip it like that? I didn’t change,” she reportedly tweeted prior to deleting her account. The star continues to have her Instagram account open, but has limited commenting to people she follows. Batwoman is still set to debut in December as a character during The CW’s annual crossover event, which this year will include episodes of “The Flash,” “Arrow” and “Supergirl.” |

Gay people are so rude and judgemental.
It's their rude commenting that caused August Ames to commit suicide. But if a straight person made similar comments about gay people, then you will be labeled a intolerant prejudice homophobic. |

Ruby Rose seems like an odd choice. Apart from the fact that she is a lesbian woman who is public about her sexual preference, there isn't really much to link her to the character. They should have cast a tall redhead. If they wanted to use an actress that was close to how she is depicted in the comics, then Karen Gillan comes to mind. Likely she would have been unachievable for the C.W. but there are other tall (bottle) redheads out there.

Ruby Rose is aweseome. I could see her as Desire the eternal from Neil Gaiman's The Sandman. She has that androgynous hotness.

It's too bad there's so many outraged idiots on social media. It's ironic that they think of themselves as fans and fighters for the good cause. |
