Need recommendation - portable storage
My laptop is getting low on free disk space, so I need to move about 25-30gb worth of stuff (music, videos, pictures, documents). I'm mulling over a couple of options...
1. USB stick(s) - Can get a 32gb stick for around $39 - or - 2. Portable HD - Best Buy has a Western Digital portable 320gb HD for $69, and a Seagate portable 500gb HD for $89. Leaning toward option two, just for the value, but all the materials I've seen paints the WD HD as a device to backup a laptop. Which isn't bad, but I'm primarily looking for just an external HD to move things back and forth between it and my laptop. And that leads me to a couple of questions: First, the dumb one...a HD like the WD one can be used as just a straight HD, as a simple storage device, right? Second, anyone here have any first-hand experience with Western Digital and/or Seagate hard drives? All the customer reviews I've seen thus far have been overwhelmingly positive (especially Seagate), but this is somewhat uncharted territory... I welcome and appreciate your input. P.S. - For the record, these are the specific products I'm looking at: Code:

IMO go with the Western Digital.
I've had 2 Seagate drives crash in the past. Some come with backup software, but can be used as a simple storage devise. |

Would be nice if you could have it both ways....as a backup, and as a slave drive. If not, I might eventually get a 32gb flash drive or two, use those as slave drives, and use a portable HD as a backup. Appreciate the heads up re Seagate. Surprising, since I see more positive reviews overall on the internet for Seagate than for Western. |

You would be better off getting an portable external HDD, which will be cheaper and can store more data than a USB flash drive.

I have the same problem but I'm holding out 'till production in Thailand picks back up so these insane hard drive prices come down. A 1.5 TB HD I paid $80 for 10 months ago is now going for $199... Thats insane
As for a right now fix? As long as you're just using them for short term storage then I would go with flash drives. In my opinion portable hard drives are all junk that if your lucky will last you two years. If you really want the portability then just buy a regular internal hard drive and then a USB docking station. Once these prices stabilize you'll be able to get both for cheaper then an external.

i definitely choose WD etx. HDD.
BUT, since WD's factory got a disaster and had to reduce their production to 50%, the price for all WD HDD is rocketing in my area. it's even double the normal price. so, if I want to buy 1 of those HDD, I probably wait until January. |

Seagate Ext. Hard Drive 250 GB
I have had a Seagate Ext. Hard Drive for some 4 years now, constantly down
loading, saving and deleting all kinds of files & porn wmv's -etc. With no problems what-so-ever! I've even run my virus protection thru it and de-fragged it. |

My problem is that I was looking for just a slave drive to park some unnecessary files, but when I started looking into the portable external drives, and the built-in backup software most of them have, I was seduced by the backup features, so I'm trying to have my cake and eat it too, so to speak. I suppose eventually, and especially if I were to do more mobile computing, I'll try a big (16 or 32gb) flash drive, just to try it, or, if I want to dig into my three old laptops and pull some media or other software from them. Anyway, I'm probably going to hold off purchasing until either Christmas weekend, or January, when prices will tend to be at their lowest, but will still check Best Buy daily, especially the warehouse (ship-to-store) stock, which often goes on sale without advance notice. Got a killer GPS w/voice for 1/2 price that way back in May. |

The external HD is always the better choice..I don't trust WD though. Iomega is the only one of value that I would invest in.
