What is a mirror?

I mean other than that shiney thing hanging in the bathroom that scares the bejesus out of me in the morning. I often see where files are uploaded or downloaded using a mirror. I don't know what that means or how to use one. Help this computer moron.

Simple. It's an alternate source to download a file. It usually acts as insurance against file deletion or to provide an alternative host for those who don't have access to the primary filehost.

Example: I upload a large multi-part archive file to rapidshare. Some people don't have premium access to RS and since the file is split into multiple parts, it will take a very long time to fully download. For those people, I also upload the file to hotfile. Hotfile in this case, is the mirror - just a secondary location where the file is stored.

It is also standard to assume that "mirrors" can be mixed and matched unless stated otherwise.

So you d/l part1.rar from one file host

you should be able to download part2.rar from another file host and still have the "total" file unrar correctly.

mirrors are great for members that do not have or own a Premium account to download with

which wikileaks is using to create a supposedly hackproof mirrornet. One simply doesn't try to take wikileaks down. like having Sneakers the movie in reality... Just won't happen.

and assange (sp) has been in jail before for computer hacking so he's a pro here.
