Utilizing HJ Split.
ALL files need to be downloaded first, to a single folder.
Unviewable means the file can not be viewed individually, it is an extension of a complete file that must be joined.
This applies to split files w/ HJ Split and Rar files (and sum udders that are far less common).
HJ split it is easy to use.
Once all files are downloaded to a folder,verify, using properties, that all files are the same size, except for the last file, and are named in the same fashion, i.e. same file name w/ .001, .002, etc. at the end, open HJ select Join, click on input file and select the folder the file is in in the look in bar at the top of the screen. One of the ext files will show up in the screen body. Select that and clic on open, then it will return you to the original screen. Click on start and away you go.
Once joined, the joined file will be in the folder it was selected from and remember to delete the individual ext files, after determining that the flic is playable.

Utilizing WinRar
Again all files need to be downloaded to one folder. Verify that the files are the correct size, per the above, and properly named, title.part1.rar, title.part2.rar, etc.
Open WinRar and select the folder in the browser bar.
Once selected the files that are RAR will come up in the main screen.
Select any one of the folders, and click on the Extract To Icon.
Select the destination in the right hand screen, and click OK.
If PassWord protected, you will be prompted for the PassWord, and enter it. Click OK and the xtraction to the selected destination will occur.
Verify the viewability and delete the original individual files, per above.

Regarding Posting (tools below, Dubya's ramblings 1st)

First of all, I wish to preface my request with a reiteration of a previous Post of mine as to how AMAZED I am at the QUALITY and quantity of Posts here at PS V & C. Simply AWESOME!!!! You guys and gals are stupendous! Or, in more current vernacular, "The Bomb"!

A few requests:

Welcome to all the NEW Posters. This is NOT a blog. The "Planet" is a FUN place, for all to share. Please abide by the Posting rules.

PLEASE read the "Everyone Read Before Posting" Thread, at close to the top of the Forum Home Page. It provides the Posting Guidelines for Vintage and Classic. Please make special note: NO Flics with a production date after 06/95 are allowed at PS V & C.

Additionally, there is a new SubForum Vintage and Classic Clips located above the V & C home Page. Please Post Clips and Pics in the new SubForum. We would like to reserve the Vintage and Classic main area for Full Flics. Thanks.

What with the veritable plethora of wonderful Posters, it is more important to check the QD (Quick Directory, located as a separate Thread at, or near the top of the Forum) and the NFM (Next Full Movie Thread in the same area) prior to Posting. Or utilize the "Search Engine". As the volume expands exponentially, the potential for duplicate Posts increases.

Movies that are unjoinable should be listed as "Clips" or "shorts" in the title, such as this Post from debarkader, "Die Meisterreiter (short, Gina Janssen)". If only joinable thru the utiliztion of "joining" software, it should be indicated in the body of the Post as "indidually viewable". ONLY movies that can be joined into a full Flic should be Posted with solely the Title, Date (and references) in the Thread title.

If you wish to have a reference in the title of the Post, such as "Marc Dorcel", or the premier actress, I would appreciate it if it could be a suffix in lieu of a prefix. The "QD" is maintained in alpha order and to "massage" the title can be a problem when the title is after the "prefix".

Also, if the Flic was procured thru a download or a torrent, remember to THANK the provider within your Post.

Regarding the "QD", I attempt to maintain it on at least an every other day basis. However, with the increased amount of the most VERY WELCOME comments from Members to the Posters, it becomes more probable that I could miss a new Post, as the "new" are interspersed amongst the "brought forwards". If I miss one that any Poster has contributed, feel free to PM me.

Again, my sincere THANKS for all who contribute to PS V & C. Not only the Posters, the "heart and soul", but all who make this sucha special place.

Well, we gotta lotta (Carla?) new and WELCOME faces, and if like yours sum'times t(un)ruly, at the onset, I had trouble tyin' my shoelaces (LOL) (Thanks to Nordlight in Hamburg, Germany and Mac for alla the coaching), there may be sum' without the wherewithall to Post up, create Prevs, etc.

"VD" Quickie (LOL) Tut

Remember that only AVI files can be modified.
After you open VD, left clic on "video" (fourth from left), and select "direct stream copy".
Then left clic on "file" and select "open video file".
(Often you will get an error message stating that you should use "full processing mode", just "X" it out).
Assuming you figgered out how to use the navigation buttons (if not, let me know), select the "cut" you wish to make and then left clic on file, again, and select "Save as AVI".
Name the file and "save". It will be saved in the file it originated from

Password Problems?

Even tho I always check my files to make sure the password & joining process work there are always some who seem to have a problem.

The most common problem is that a file will finish downloading before it is complete even tho it appears to be okay. I'm told by friends that this occurs most often with those who use certain download managers. Then you may get a message like corrupted archive or incorrect password?, in which case you will need to re-download.

To avoid this problem it's best to download these files the old fashion way, one at a time, right click save as. Also check the file sizes to be sure they are correct. Make sure each file name is the same and that you enter the password exactly as it is given.

Reasons that can lead to crc error/ wrong password:
case sensitive pass not taken into consideration ...
bad file sector (hard disk) on leechers pc leads to crc error during unrar or unzip ...
incomplete downloads showing 100% download !
packets error - downloading from remote & over-saturated mirror links
When data is transfered, it is usually in small blocks and each block is given a CRC value. If something goes wrong with the data between the time it leaves the source (RS) and arrives at its destination (leecher), the CRC sent at the source will no longer match the one that is calculated when the data arrives - this is when the cyclic redundancy check error will appear.

at last - seeding/uploading a corrupted rar/zip file on RS

Solutions:
use appropriate download managers - Internet Download Manager ; RapGet ; and so on

How to identify corrupted file:
during the unrar process check which part the process stops

Downloading Again
clear all cookies ; else the same bad file will be downloaded
clear temporary internet files
refresh all pages

I've been seeing far too many replies to posts here stating that the downloader is having problems unrar'ing a movie. In nearly all cases, the problem is not with the password or the files on the server, but with the files downloaded.

Whenever you have a problem with a Winrar archive, you need to determine whether the problem is the password or whether you have corrupted segments. The way to do this is by unpacking the file one segment at a time. That isolates the password from the unpacking operation, and lets you determine which of the segments are corrupted.

Move the first segment to another folder and unrar it. It should unrar its data, then call for the next segment. Leaving that operation pending, move the second segment to that folder, then click OK in Winrar. Winrar will continue unpacking the file, pausing at the end of the segment to ask for another. Move it, and continue. Keep doing this until you either get a complete file, or you have Winrar tell you that you have a corrupted/incomplete segment. That error message would occur instead of the Winrar message asking for the next segment. You will then know that the last segment that you moved was the corrupted one, and you can download it.

If you continue to get a corrupted segment in repeated downloads, make sure that you clear your browser's cache. (And delete the old corrupted segment(s) so that you don't confuse them with a new one.) Better yet, try a different browser. If you are using a download manager, download the segment(s) without a download manager to avoid multiple streams of data somehow corrupting the file.

If you are using an incorrect password, Winrar will tell you that separately from the unpacking operation.

Last, but not least, make sure you have a 3.x version of WinRAR installed because versions prior to v3 may not be compatible with the newer archives. If you are using a different program, such as 7zip, use Winrar. Conversely, if you are using Winrar, you might try 7zip for stubborn files.

Over at VEF I wrote a tutorial on how to use x264 to make bluray compatible MP4 files. I was planning to do the same here, but I'm not sure where to post it (any mods reading this?) For now, I'm just going to explain why I recently switched from XviD to x264 for encoding, and give you an example of how to extract video and audio streams from MP4 files and also how to remux them.

I used to encode with XviD. It worked great for me and I had very good results for several years, while constantly tweaking the settings and playing around with the filesize vs. quality balance. I had heard about H.264/x264 but I resisted trying it for a long time because I wanted my rips to be playable on standalone players as well as PC's and Macs. I finally made the switch when I learned about bluray compatible settings in x264, and now I'm a total convert.

The great advantage of x264 over XviD/DivX is it has much higher compression, so you either get a much smaller file for the same quality or higher quality for the same file size. I recently made an upgrade of Fireworks that is half the size of my previous XviD version (700 MB vs. 1400 MB) and I think it looks even better. This example is not unusual -- normally x264 can give the same quality at 50-65% of the size of XviD or DivX.

The disadvantages of x264 are 1. it takes more processing power to decode, so older machines have a harder time with it; 2. it's not as easy to edit or make clips; and 3. many DVD standalone players that can play DivX files cannot play x264 (although bluray players can).

If you've seen some of my recent rips in x264, you've probably noticed that the quality is even better than my previous rips in XviD (and that's after a lot of reading, experimenting and tweaking the settings of XviD for years.)


How to extract and remux MP4 files

I recently posted a new rip of Laura's Toys (post is here) and after posting I found out that the 2nd audio track (director's commentary) was somehow cut short by 32 minutes. So I re-ripped the audio track from the DVD, converted it to AAC audio, and remuxed it with the original video and 1st audio track (original soundtrack) to create a new MP4 file. Problem is, a lot of people already downloaded the original file, which plays and sound fine, except that the commentary is incomplete. There's no reason they should have to redownload the entire vid (1.22 GB) just for an optional 48 MB audio track.

So I'm going to use this opportunity to explain how to extract the video and audio streams from my original LaurasToys.mp4 and then remux the video and 1st audio track with the newly ripped commentary audio. This same method can be used to add additional language tracks, subtitles, chapters and other media files to MP4 files.

We'll use a cool little piece of freeware called Yamb, which is a GUI for mp4box, the versatile tool for making, editing and extracting mp4 files. The program is free and only 6.8 MB (checked clean for viruses and malware). The download page and direct download link are here:

On the left side of Yamb, click on Editing, then double click "Click to extract streams from AVI/MP4/MOV/TS files"

Under Content you should now see three files listed, one video (AVC) and two audio (AAC). Tick the radio button "Extract all streams to raw format"

The Output location by default is the same folder that LaurasToys.mp4 is already in.

When extraction is complete, click the Back button twice to get back to the Main window

On left side, click on Creation

Double click "Click to create an MP4 file with multiple audio, video, subtitle and chapters steams"

Click Add, and choose LaurasToys_track1.h264 [this is the video track]

Click Add again, and choose LaurasToys_track2.aac [this is the main audio track]

Click Add again, and choose commentary.mp4 [this is the commentary audio track]

The first two files were created by Yamb and should be in the same folder where LaurasToys.mp4 is located. The third, commentary.mp4, you should have downloaded from rapidshare -- the link is in my original thread here

In the Output box, give the new file a different name, e.g. LaurasToys_remux.mp4

Optional: If you want to specify the language and title of the two audio tracks, here's how.

Click on LaurasToys_track2.aac to highlight it, then click Properties

In the Properties dialog, click the Language dropdown box and select English

In the Track Name box, you can type in whatever you want, e.g. Original Soundtrack (just to distinguish this track from the commentary track)

Click Ok

Do the same for the Commentary track, but Track Name = Commentary

Click Next

It might take awhile before you see any progress, so be patient. Notice in the sample above it took three minutes to "begin importing" the first stream. It seems to take mp4box a few minutes to prepare the files. Eventually, you'll see "Importing AVC Stream..." in the list of Events, and the green progress bar will start to move.

This muxing took six and a half minutes to complete. Yours might be more or less, depending on your processor, etc.

The new file has the original video and 1st audio tracks, plus the new secondary audio (commentary) which is now complete.

My copy of Yamb always gets stuck at 99% and won't finish, but the files are complete regardless. I have to use Task Manager to "End Task" because Yamb won't finish and it won't close on its own. Minor hassle but the program works fine otherwise.

What software do you folks use to create .avi files?

I can rip a DVD to the hard disk and get a series of .VOB files, and these can be renamed to function as .mpg, but even if you join then, you may have a 4 GB file. Is there anything that will crunch this to a 700 MB .avi?

I can rip a DVD to the hard disk and get a series of .VOB files, and these can be renamed to function as .mpg, but even if you join then, you may have a 4 GB file. Is there anything that will crunch this to a 700 MB .avi?

The easiest thing for you to use might be Fairuse Wizard's free version. Fairuse makes excellent avi's; the free version has some limitations such as a maximum 700MB file. I've been using the premium version for nearly ten years. Another program might be Any Video Converter (free edition), although I usually don't use it for converting full dvd's to avi's (I use it to convert between formats, such as from mkv to avi.) Neither program will accept VIDEO_TS folders, though - for a dvd you'll have to present the info as an ISO file. To convert the VIDEO_TS files to an ISO, use ImgBurn. ImgBurn is also free and is something that you should have around, anyway. It's the easiest way to create ISO images or to burn ISO images or VIDEO_TS folders to a blank DVD.
