How is a porn career different in US vs Europe?
Is porn different in American than in Europe? I notice in America the girls doing porn can do 1-10 then retire you never hear from them again. Of coures there are exceptions, however, it seems like 1/3 or more fall in this category. Meanwhile, in Europe it seems like a actress will appear in all sorts of movies and be part of "circuit" where she shoots with multiple companies becomes part of the porn community.
I've seen this in reality tv as well, in America they'll find someone new to do the show, while in Europe "reality tv" is a career and they'll have the same characters in multiple shows ready to be booked. |

"Europe is a bunch of different countries, each with its own porn industry (some countries in Europe have none).
I would say that the main distinction, broadly, is between Eastern and Western Europe.

Can you give any examples of the actresses you were thinking about? And what's your perspective, are you from the US or from Europe or from somewhere else? That would be helpful to provide a decent answer which I would love to give. This revolves around the state of the professional industry and the market, which is..."peculiar"...at best in most European countries, at least from my point of view.

Each country in Europe also got different laws that allows or not porn industry in legal way. There are big and popular studios/production/sites in Europe.
For those who dont know Russia is not in Europe or European Union. Porn in Russia is special story due to laws. Girls and guys are coming from both eastern and western Europe, central all around. France, UK (England), Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Luxemburg, Hungary, Czech Republic,...etc are more popular place. In short industry in USA is much more bigger and professional, more money overall, production is on top level, sets (scenes), equipment (camers, lights, sound,...etc). Money is on the first place. |

Frenchie here : professionnal porn from my country is mostly trash in my opinion. First, the law makes the condom mandatory. So unless you are watching an amateur video, the male performer will always wear a condom.
Now when it comes about the video realization, there are no in-betweens : either it's poorly realized, either it's too artificial and calculated. Example of poorly realized videos : Jacquie & Michel studio. Bad camera angles, male performers never shutting their mouth and saying cringy stuff, cameraman talking and making jokes. Then we have more professionnal porn : Marc Dorcel is the biggest french porn studio if I'm not wrong. For me it looks really fake, camera angles too well calculated, light too artificial and not natural, it lacks really of spontaneity. I can't "project" myself into the scene. Like with Bl@cked or Tu$hy in USA. I never seen (or rarely) a french scene truly exciting. What a shame... |

Sure, it is about the money. Working in porn is a job to earn money. And as with other jobs, people join and leave because they find out that it is not for them. So one time appearances happen in the US as well as in Europe.
The difference is that in the US you at least have a chance to have a career whereas in Europe this is difficult at best. Career meaning working full time as your only job and earning enough money to make a living. In recent years there wasn't really a large, professional industry in most of Europe unlike there is in the US. The European market is highly dominated by amateur and ProAm content and there was a noticeable shift away from professional productions over the past decades. Platforms like MDH made a big impact. This is similar to the rise of platforms like MFC and, more recently, OF in the US. In Germany, as an example, I'd say most of it was gone by 2010 with a noticeable decline starting around 2005 or so. Obviously, all dates given are +/-, give or take, and aren't 100% absolute. But this obviously makes it difficult as a full time porn actress. And there are exceptions, for example Mia Magma joined the industry in 2010, but being late to the party obviously was not exactly helpful so her career didn't last long. She then became a singer and as of November 2020 she now back on OF doing porn, now under the name of Mia Julia. But, according to a statement, not because of the money, but because she wanted to come back. Laura Paradise is another name that comes to mind, she started on MDH around 2010 or so and now also runs her own OF as CandyXS. Big names in the professional German industry were Videorama and M4gm4f1lm. Both were founded in the 1980s. Videorama is the company known for working with actresses like Gina Wild in the late 1990s and early 2000s which is probably the only German actress that managed to gain at least some international attention at that time. Videorama was also the company that Harry S Morgan worked for, who was a famous director of porn movies since the 1980s. He passed away in 2011. Videorama declared bankruptcy in 2016. M4gm4f1lm still exists, but as far as I'm aware only plays a minor role between all the independent amateur and ProAm productions and itself mostly recruits talent from among this scene, so itself could be seen as a ProAm label. I know barely any of the actresses and don't feel like seeing many repeatedly. W0lf W4gn3r and his label H1tz3fr31 are new entries in the industry since 2017/2018 and from what I've witnessed there is some international recognition, so that's a step forward for the German and European porn industry. But just like with M4gm4f1lm the actresses are largely unknown and not many appear repeatedly. I guess this is part of a rebuilding process of the industry, we'll still have to wait what this leads to and who comes out as a well known professional at the other end, if any. At this time you rather recognize the actors than the actresses, because there are even less of them and they appear all the time. Just like actresses from Eastern Europe came to Germany for their career to make a step further, we see German actresses moving to the US for that. Katja Kassin and Tara Young/Ana Nova are early examples, more recent ones include Anny Aurora and Texas Patti. Not counting the German actresses that already lived in the US prior to starting their porn career, like Dru Berrymore and, more recently, Jewelz Blu. To give a, more or less random, example on the state of European industry: The English Wikipedia lists 17 entries on the list of "German pornographic film actresses" with most of them being former actresses. And 17 is probably the most among the European countries, other countries barely manage to have a list at all. The German Wikipedia doesn't even have such a list for German pornographic actresses. In its list of all pornographic actors and actresses are around 900 entries, but most of them are from the US. I think the remains of the industry in Europe, if there even was one in the first place, is mostly known locally. If we go through the countries west to east from my point of view as a German: Portugal: Not aware of any industry Spain: F4k1ng5 and pu74l0cur4, very similar to the situation in Germany, amateur and ProAm, however known (at least for me) to bring up Jordi, so once again an actor better known than most of the actresses, and Fayna, who is probably one of the few more widely known actresses, at least for me, but she has retired since. There also was leche69, but it doesn't exist anymore as it seems. France: As RevanWesker already said, J+M and M4rc D0rc3l. Again, J+M is pretty big, and while it obviously is a professional company (with 50 full time employees according to them, but with most of them probably in customer support, production, marketing, etc.) I guess there aren't very many, if any, professional actresses working for them. And MD shares, from what I've witnessed, a similar fate as for example M4gm4f1lm in Germany, a once rather well known professional production company that isn't as important and prolific as they used to be in todays market. Pierre Woodman is also still in business, but this is also more of amateur and ProAm work nowadays. Which isn't his fault, that's just how the industry and the market is at the moment. Belgium, Netherlands: There is some, probably only known locally, to a very small extent known across the border in Germany and far away from being a meaningful industry of any sort. m47ur3.nl is probably the best known site, they work with talent from all over Europe and don't focus on the netherlands, as they would simply not be able to produce enough content, I guess. There was Julie Skyhigh, may she rest in peace, as the only prolific and more or less well known actress. She did some work across Europe and I think in the US as well, but I'm not entirely sure. The scandinavian countries: Not aware of any industry as of 2020, there used to be some in the past. If there still is any, then probably only known locally. I also rarely, if ever, see actresses from these countries in productions of other countries. Italy: Well, there is always Mr. Salieri and he was/is working with well know professional actresses, but many of those are from the US. Czech Republic: Probably most famous for amateur and ProAm reality porn of various genres, but also quite a bit away from a professional industry, but probably one of the bigger ones Europe has to offer. Everything north, north-east, east and south-east from here on has no industry that I'm aware of, some actresses from these countries are coming to the ones listed to do work. Tiffany Tatum from Hungary is one example, she has done work in almost all major European countries that have something like a porn industry and also did some work in the US, I think. So, in conclusion, the European countries that have a porn industry are not comparable at all to the one in the US. Yeah, I know, no surprise. There is an avid scene in some of the countries, but as of now there aren't many, if any, actresses that can solely rely on her porn career without reaching out to the US, I think. There is a market shift going on for some time and there are signs of rebuilding an industry with new brands and names popping up here and there, but if that will ever lead to anything is yet to be seen. I can't imagine we once again get actresses with international acclaim even beyond Europe that stay here and work with local companies as a full time porn star. But then again, I like to be proven wrong, and things are changing all the time. We'll see. |
