Swedish-American actress whose career spanned both the silent and sound film eras. A tall, striking blonde with an intense screen presence, Garbo starred in a number of successful films in the 1930's, including Anna Christie (1931), Mata Hari (1931), Grand Hotel (1932), Queen Christina (1933), Anna Karenina (1935), and Camille (1936). She is perhaps best known for her surprising comedic turn in Ninotchka (1939), opposite the facile comedic actor Melvyn Douglas. Despite being nominated for three Academy Awards for her work in the 1930's, she was considered "box-office poison" by the early 1940's, a change which led to her retirement from films in 1941, at the age of 35. Garbo spent the next 50+ years of her life as one of the world's most famous recluses, shunning all publicity and creating an aura of mystery that fascinated many and kept her in the public consciousness despite her long absence from films.
