obituaries of people still alive

A French radio station has apologised after publishing the obituaries of several prominent - and alive - people, including the Queen.

Others on the list that went live prematurely on the website of Radio France Internationale included Clint Eastwood, Pele and Brigitte Bardot.

A "technical problem" led to the publication, RFI said.

"We offer our apologies to the people concerned and to you who follow and trust us," the broadcaster added.

Broadcasters and media outlets often prepare obituary material in order to be able to publish it promptly when a death is announced.

The problem occurred when RFI was moving its website to a different content management system, according to its statement.

It said "around a hundred" draft stories were published in error - not just to its own site but to partner sites including Google and Yahoo.

'Major bug'

French businessman Bernie Tapie, 77, who was on the list of people who had their death notice published by RFI, has had his obituary published on at least two other occasions by other news outlets.

Others who made the cut on this occasion included Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, former US President Jimmy Carter and Cuba's Raul Castro.

None of them are currently dead. RFI has said it is "mobilising to rectify this major bug".

A police officer accused of trying to buy a £9.95 box of doughnuts for seven pence by sticking on a cheaper barcode has been sacked for gross misconduct.

PC Simon Read, from Cambridgeshire Police, was found to have switched the price for the cakes at a Wisbech supermarket on 10 February.

A misconduct hearing found he had breached professional standards of honesty and integrity.

PC Read, who had denied the charges, was dismissed without notice.

At the two-day hearing in Peterborough PC Read said he had made an honest mistake at a Tesco Extra self-service till.

While in uniform, he said he purchased four items from the store - the tray of 12 doughnuts, the carrots, a sandwich and a drink.

The hearing was told he scanned the carrots barcode twice and failed to scan the doughnuts barcode, paying around £4 for the items instead of about £14.

He said: "I simply scanned where I believed the barcodes were and placed them down (in the bagging area)."

The panel ruled his explanation was "lacking in credibility".

Sharmistha Michaels, chairwoman of the disciplinary panel, said: "On the balance of probabilities we are satisfied that PC Read did intentionally scan the wrong barcode."

PC Read had previously said: "I didn't check the screen. I wish I had have done."

Ms Michaels said CCTV footage showed him looking at it at the time as he selected his method of payment.

She added that if he intended to pay the correct price he could have checked that he scanned the right barcode and it if was a "genuine mistake" he had opportunities to put it right.

His actions were "incompatible with his role as a police officer".

Mark Ley-Morgan, a lawyer who set out the misconduct case, said it was "an officer effectively stealing while in uniform".

Carolina Bracken, PC Read's lawyer, said he had an "unblemished career", had served in the armed forces, before he joined Cambridgeshire police in January and had served with Thames Valley Police from 2008.

Ms Bracken said the case weighed heavily on him and he had received prank calls in the night from people offering him doughnuts.

PC Read has the right to appeal the decision.

After the ruling the Jane Gyford, deputy Chief Constable of Cambridgeshire Police, said: "The public should be able to trust that police officers in their duty will act with honesty and integrity at all times.

"I hope this outcome offers reassurance to our communities that our officers and staff will be held to account for their actions."

The Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter was assisting Utah Division of Wildlife Resource officers counting bighorn sheep when the crew spotted something mysterious from above.

The discovery was made Wednesday.

“One of the biologists is the one who spotted it and we just happened to fly directly over the top of it,” said pilot Bret Hutchings. “He was like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa, turn around, turn around!’ And I was like, ‘what.’ And he’s like, ‘There’s this thing back there – we’ve got to go look at it!’”

The crew circled back and landed the helicopter to take a closer look. They couldn’t believe their eyes.

Tucked in a red rock cove was a shiny metal monolith protruding from the ground.

“I’d say it’s probably between 10 and 12 feet-high,” Hutchings said. “We were kind of joking around that if one of us suddenly disappears, then the rest of us make a run for it.”

Hutchings said it didn’t look like it was dropped into the ground from above. It was firmly planted there.

“We were, like, thinking is this something NASA stuck up there or something. Are they bouncing satellites off it or something?” Hutchings questioned.

That said, the crew decided it didn’t appear there was any scientific purpose to it. Hutchings said it looked as if it was manmade – perhaps more of an art form than any kind of alien lifeform.

“I’m assuming it’s some new wave artist or something or, you know, somebody that was a big (2001: A Space Odyssey) fan,” Hutchings said, referencing a scene in the movie.

Because the monolith was in an area the crew feared amateur adventurers might get stuck, they were intentionally vague about its location.

The group left with pictures and videos but few answers.

Hutchings said he had seen many unusual things from the helicopter over the years, but never anything quite like this.

“That’s been about the strangest thing that I’ve come across out there in all my years of flying,” Hutchings said.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — A 12-foot “monolith” that mysteriously appeared in southeastern Utah has now disappeared just as mysteriously. But state and local authorities said it wasn’t them that took it down.

Like hundreds of others, Ryan Bacher heard about the monolith which became a worldwide phenomenon almost overnight.

Bacher said he wanted to see it for himself, so he took a couple of his kids and flew his helicopter down to southeastern Utah.

“It was a beautiful piece of art set really well in this perfect little canyon,” said Bacher. “Whoever did this, aliens or whoever, they spent a lot of time thinking about it, the direction it pointed, everything was just very unique.”

Bacher flew down Friday afternoon to take a look at the 12-foot tall, metal prism, but by Saturday morning the monolith had vanished.

“Someone took it in the night. I don’t even want to think who would have done something like that,” said Bacher. “Sadly, I thought the state did it. They thought the only way to get this out of here is to rip it out during the night.”

But officials with the Bureau of Land Management said it wasn’t them.

In a news release, BLM officials said the structure was “illegally installed.” They also said visitors who flocked to the site left behind human waste and garbage. However, they maintain they didn’t take it down.

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office didn’t remove it either.

“There isn’t a formal investigation at this point. We haven’t had a victim come forward,” said Lt. John Young.

A pile of rocks and a small pyramid made from what appears to be the same material was left behind in the monolith’s place.

BLM doesn’t recommend people go to the site though because it’s in a very remote area with no cell service, and now, there’s really nothing left to see.

It turns out the shiny monolith that was spotted in a remote southeastern Utah desert two weeks ago was not the only such object to mysteriously appear.

The alien-looking object was discovered in the US on November 18 before disappearing in equally baffling fashion on Friday evening.

Now it transpires a similar looking object has been found in Romania.

The four-metre tall upturned triangular prism appeared on Thursday on a hillside outside Piatra Neamt in the north of Romania, close to an important archaeological site.

A dark metallic structure that appears covered in concentric circles, it was spotted a few metres away from the well-known archaeological landmark the Petrodava Dacian Fortress, an fort built by the ancient Dacian people between 82 BC and AD 106.

"There is no reason to panic for those who think there is still life in the universe," local mayor Andrei Carabelea wrote on Facebook.

"My guess is that some alien, cheeky and terrible teenagers left home with their parents' UFO and started planting metal monoliths around the world. First in Utah and then at Piatra Neamt. I am honoured that they chose our city."

He said it would have been better if they had obtained a building permit but he said they would be lenient if the object attracted tourists.
