A new rule has been agreed for this season, to award one point to the driver (and team) who sets the fastest lap time during a race. The point is only awarded if the driver who sets it finishes the race in the top 10 places.
Seeing how this worked in the opening race of the season, it has been more interesting than it sounded in the run-up. The top teams all sounded like they were really trying for it in the closing laps of the race. There was a radio conversation between the leader Bottas and his pit crew about whether he could pit for new tyres especially to go for the fastest lap, as he had a 25 second lead and could have made a stop and kept the lead. They decided it was too much of a risk for 1 point but it is good to see that this has introduced a new element.

The bad luck of the Australians in their home race continued, with Ricciardo not even managing to get across the start line before breaking his car in a freak accident. (Unfortunately his bad luck was mine also, as I had him as my double point scorer in the official Fantasy F1 game. Does anyone else here play that?)

why not make it simplier and just give the bonus point to the driver who wins qualifying, but they should really do something about the points system in general.

i would have awarded the top 15 drivers with points so the lower ranked teams have something to race for.

Let's say you got 1 point for 15th and 2 points for 14th then we would see some racing in the back, now you need to make 10th to just get that one point and that is almost hopeless if you're 12th or belew esp in the later stages of the race

What a nightmare weekend for Charles Leclerc at his home race at Monaco. Watching qualifying slip away from him while stuck in the garage because the team assumed he had already done enough. Then having to make reckless lunges during the race that gave him a puncture that he desperately tried to keep going on and causing a safety car before having to retire, as amazingly the only car not to finish the race.
You can imagine some shouting will be done behind the scenes after that, at Ferrari HQ.

Fitting though, that Hamilton won the race as the weekend was dedicated to the memory of his mentor Niki Lauda, who passed away a few days previously.

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton wins the Canadian GP in what should have been Sebastian Vettel's deserving race.

Ferrari's Vettel had driven a stellar race and deserved his first race of the season. He had crossed the line first, but due to an earlier 5-second penalty was dropped to second place. Team mate Charles Leclerc finished third.

Vettel had come off the track and onto the grass, and left very little room for Hamilton as he rejoined the race on Lap 58. He was then given a 5-second penalty at the end of the race.
