You're right, it doesn't work here (as well as on any other site that doesn't support HTTPS encryption) but it works with other forums that I visit regularly.

Perhaps they should call it "HTTPS almost Everywhere" ^^

About what it does, you can find many articles explaining the benefits of an HTTPS protocol much better than I could, but basically it activates the encrypted transmission which guarantees the confidentiality and integrity of the data exchanged.
