got a fresh install of w10 from computer shop with number of other stuff. had wifi prob, so had to go back to shop again. fixed that and now my E: DRIVE has disappeared!

i first noticed b/c the eject button won't pop it open (wanted to load DVD w my BACKUP files!) so i tried via explorer. i've used "eject" option in the past, but it's not even seeing the drive itself this time, let alone giving me options like that for it.

still confused by w10 so finding dev mgr itself tricky. need a few hours to sort out "systems" "settings" "devices" panels which are slightly diff from w7 versions i'm used to. somewhere along the way i *did* find "DVDROM -- device not connected". not a place with "connect" or "enable" as an option tho or i wudn't be asking.

is this an easy fix? where? how?

would have waited to figure out settings/dev mgr before asking, but i'm racing a deadline re: returning to shop (again

). so pls excuse half-assed question -- if someone can talk me into getting drive back on in next few hours i'll be greatly appreciative.

otherwise i'll try to figure out w10 better and ask again tomorrow**....

Sounds like your DVD drive went kaput. Although I wouldn't also exclude the possibility that while reassembling your computer, the shop owner forgot to attach the DVD drive cable to the MOBO.
Is your PC a laptop or a Desktop?

i doubt it's gone kaput -- i used it last week to load said backups once (later DELETED them before sending back to shop for wifi issue). i like your second theory better.

not even sure what the wifi issue was -- he says it took a "software fix", then added "...but i had to open the case up again". say whu...?!

so yeah, he was mucking around in there w cables, etc. kick in the pants if he reconnected some modem interface, only to DISconnect the drive one at the same time!

laptop. new HDD/w10.0 to replace old HDD/w7.1 which bit the big one.

should explorer tree be seeing an empty drive? i notice it's not showing my B: or D: drives (USB) either, until i plug something IN to them.

by that logic, i might expect the DVD to be absent until i pop a disk IN, right? but i can't even try, since the physical eject button isn't responding.

maybe, i dunno. not exactly the same since the USBs are just ports, whereas the DVD is physically in the laptop whether empty or not.

so...dev mgr/disk drives shows only the HDD. but when i turn on "show hidden devices", 4(!) more appear:

corsair voyager USB device
hp CDDVDW TS-...
lexar USB flash drive USB device
sundisk cruzar USB device
TOSHIBA MQ04A... [HDD]

lexar and sundisk are the 2 flash drives i've been using. i dunno about corsair; i guess the repair shop? there's only 2 USB slots; not entirely clear how 3 diff flash drives are covered. would be helpful if it told me which entry goes with which DRIVE LETTER, but it doesn't and i can't see any way (context menu, etc) to do that. in each case, it gives me:

uninstall driver
update driver
scan for hardware changes
properties

i've tried the first 3, but nothing changes. in particular, #3 does not magically turn the drive back on a la plug-n-play. it remains hidden with message:

"Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)

To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer."

does this change anything? or are we still looking at "guy forgot to connect internal cable"?

If memory serves me:

'External' Drives in Win 10 don't necessarily keep the same drive letter, so they don't show letters in device manager.

Why 3 drives but only 2 usb slots?
Every drive ever plugged in is counted, at least I assume it is, my list shows over 20 drives, one of which I bought in 2011, and haven't plugged into the PC in at least 2 years.
My external CD/DVD Writer shows in the list even though I don't think I've used it since I bought the PC in 2017, it was used to install games/drivers, and put back in the box, where it's remained since.

This should be your drive?

if you press the eject on the drive and get nothing, the very first thing I would check is it connected to the power supply

shouldn't dev mgr be showing HDD and DVD drives only, and both as unhidden? HDD drive unhidden with 3 phantom flashes and a phantom DVD hidden makes no sense to me no how. albeit for diff reasons (DVD at least supposed to be there; ports displaying past flash use...just baffling...).

does hidden actly mean "disconnected" or "disabled" in this case? or (as with flashes) "log of prior usage"?

if i saw "unhide" option, i at least would have tried it.

how so? this is a laptop. its power supply is one and the same.

unless, again, u mean "internal cables" etc.

@gwynd: sorry, my whole "used to be there" post was written BEFORE seeing yours (but posted afterwards).

still don't understand why hidden devices serves as a "log" of prior drive/port use, but ok, you're confirming that it does. it's not like i was ignoring your post and asking anew!

think i've said it already, but just to be clear -- my prev experience with flaky "open drive" buttons (common indeed!) could be resolved by software "eject" option in explorer. of course, drive needed to be VISIBLE in explorer to begin with to do this.

funny, tho, i also recall times with drive suddenly "appearing" there when i pop in a DVD and get it up to speed. which, obviously, was not during one of these "door won't open" occurrences. can't both happen at once or we'd be...um...where we are now.

i must admit, it DOES feel like lack of power when u hit the button and nothing responds. at least with my external one (years back) there was a little LIGHT to check. now it's just...door won't open, door won't open. end of story.

like being ghosted.
