also i'm not getting your distinction betw 39s and 40s. are u saying u need to jump the gun a bit in starting kneel #2 or risk a turnover or something by overshooting the 40? ok, that makes sense i guess. but it doesn't change the example none; just change the kneel times to 1:47, 1:08, and 0:29 then.

so...maximum u can burn up with 3 kneels is 1:57, not 2:00? ok, i guess.
still don't see how any interruption is gonna "derail" that?!

Ball is snapped when Center gives it to QB. Taking the knee is end of a play that start with snapping the ball.

What you are missing is that using Timeout is stopping the clock. Meaning the clock is not running and offense would start their next play at 1:47 instead of 1:07.

u seem to be implying that the opponent taking a knee not only stops the clock but also STEALS ONE OF YOUR DOWNS...??

which is what i'm not seeing.

OK, so I'll try again:
A team take a knee to complete 1st down with 1:47 left.

If the opponent doesn't have a timeout, they simply wait till 1:07 when they take a knee on 2nd down, wait until 0:27 to take the knee on 3rd down and that's it... game over.

But if the opponent have a timeout, they take it and stop the clock. That mean a 2nd down happens at 1:47 a 3rd down happens at 1:07 and 4th down happens at 0:27 at which point opponent get the ball since you didn't get 10 yards needed for new set of downs.
