more on the "late to football" theme. what's the big deal about timeouts?

30 seconds to catch your breath, regroup, change a game plan, yeah sure, all fine and dandy, but the way the announcers OBSESS over these, there's clearly more to them. do they REPOSITION the BALL after a timeout? reset the PLAY CLOCK? otherwise AFFECT the SCORE somehow?

it's so bad that i've heard a team's loss attributed to "having forgetton to take" one on occasion. what thu...??

seem pretty minor to me. what am i missing?

Yes, It does reset the game clock. (Delay of game is a 5 yard penalty) so coaches/players will take them if they can't get the play off in time. Many games have been lost because a team doesn't have a time out and just have no way to stop the game clock from running out.

As posted by above me it's a lot of time management.
