Default NHRA Drag Racing

The 2019 season kicked off earlier this month in Pomona and there aren't many things more exciting in racing than watching these beasts tear down a track in under 4 seconds with the smell of rubber and Nitro Methane in the air ... mmmm sounds healthy LOL!

Here is what week 1 looked like:

Pomona Results: Robert Hight wins for fourth time at Pomona; Doug Kalitta, Bo Butner win back-to-back Winternationals
Robert Hight (Funny Car), Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel), Bo Butner (Pro Stock) all opened the season with wins at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals.

11 Feb 2019

Robert Hight claimed his fourth win at Auto Club Raceway to kick off the 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series the right way. He defeated Jack Beckman with a 3.881-second, 329.75 mph holeshot run to leave the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals with the points lead.

Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel) and Bo Butner (Pro Stock) also leave Pomona with victories and the lead in their categories. Kalitta became just the second Top Fuel driver to win back-to-back Winternationals (Larry Dixon being the other) as he ended Steve Torrence's 27-round win streak. Butner also won back-to-back Winternationals as he beat teammate Jason Line.

Top Fuel winner Doug Kalitta: “Growing up and watching Connie [Kalitta, team owner and uncle] race, this place has always been very special for me, so to have success here is just more than I can imagine.

“My car started smoking the tires and I was sure he was going to blow by me and that we had given it away, but we hung in there and got the win light. There was no lifting. It was either going to blow or get the win. There was nothing to gain by [lifting]. Steve and that Capco group are bad ass, and we were real fortunate to get by them. He’s had a helluva streak and there’s no better place to get by him than the Winternationals.”

Funny Car winner Robert Hight: “It’s a long season. You look at the Funny car class and it looks tougher than last season, so to be the No. 1 qualifier and win the race is quite an accomplishment for this team. You could see today that everyone was running [3.]80s and stacking up. It’s not going to be easy. You’re going to have to be on your game on the starting line and consistent with your car. I’ve never seen Jimmy Prock more confident. We tested well and came right in here and didn’t miss a beat.

“With all that we’ve gone through this year with new people and new sponsors and cars, this really makes it all pay off. This is my fourth Winternationals here, and it’s one of the majors, as far as I’m concerned.”

Pro Stock winner Bo Butner: "It’s the same car the same team… we have some new guys but mixed in with a lot of the old guys, too. I had lane choice in the final round and a lot of people were questioning why I took the right lane, but I’m not really sure there was a preferred lane. But my car was a very good Top Sportsman car today, I felt like I could have dialed it in.

"I didn’t struggle hitting the tree, I moved like .006 through all four rounds but I knew I needed to pick up two-hundredths of a second. So.. I mean, she flat out missed the tree, let’s be honest. She makes good runs and she’s a great driver. She missed the tree. When it’s your time, it’s your time. I definitely felt like we had the best car all four rounds."

The season continues with the Magic Dry Organic Absorbent NHRA Arizona Nationals in Phoenix.

ROUND-BY-ROUND RECAPS
Funny Car | Pro Stock | Top Fuel Harley final | Sportsman finals

TOP FUEL

Top Fuel round 1: Showing no signs of being a rookie, Austin Prock left on his John Force Racing teammate, former world champ Brittany Force, then expertly pedaled his Montana Brand dragster after it shook the tires, then raced to his first round-win to highlight a wild first round of Top Fuel. NHRA legend Don Prudhomme, who helped get Prock's car funded, said, "I just saw a rookie drive like a veteran."

He will face Mike Salinas, as the San Jose, Calif. native defeated Clay Millican with a stout 3.68 to start off Monday's action. That will get him lane choice in the second round. Reigning world champ Steve Torrence extended his unbeaten streak to 25 straight rounds with low e.t. of the round, a 3.688, to beat Steve Faria, and will have a semifinal bye for the 14-car field. Torrence’s father, Billy, also advanced with a tire-shaking victory over Cameron Ferre.

Top Fuel round 2: Doug Kalitta, one of the best drivers in Top Fuel history, showcased those skills with a huge holeshot victory over Billy Torrence. Kalitta’s .048 reaction time and 3.716 edged Torrence’s quicker-but-later 3.670 by .002-second at the stripe.

Mike Salinas advanced to the semifinals by .006 over rookie Austin Prock in a fabulous 3.68 to 3.69 battle while Steve Torrence extended his unbeaten streak to 26 rounds on a bye run. Terry McMillen reset both ends of his career best performances with a blast of 3.696 at 329.91 (previous: 3.710, 329.75) in beating Leah Pritchett, who kaboomed the blower at halftrack.

Top Fuel semifinals: Both semifinal Top Fuel races were decided on a holeshot, with Steve Torrence eking past Mike Salinas and Doug Kalitta defeating Terry McMillen.

The victory for Torrence extended his unbeaten streak to 27 rounds as his holeshot-aided 3.688 edged out Salinas’ 3.687 while Kalitta won on a holeshot for the second straight time, edging Terry McMillen, 3708 to 3.706. Torrence, appearing in his seventh straight NHRA final round, will have lane choice over Kalitta, who reached the final round for the 97th time in his career.

Top Fuel final: Doug Kalitta put an end to Steve Torrence’s long win streak, winning a thrilling back and forth final-round battle with his third straight holeshot win to claim his second straight Winternationals Top Fuel title.

The win, the 45th of Kalitta’s career, started with a .025-second holeshot, but his Mac Tools dragster began to lose traction partway through the run, allowing Torrence to close the gap by halftrack to just .002-second. Torrence may well have gone on to win, but his Capco Contractors dragster experienced mechanical breakage nearing the finish line, allowing Kalitta to hit the win stripe first.

Kalitta is only the second driver, behind Larry Dixon, to win the Winternationals in back-to-back years.

FUNNY CAR

Funny Car round 1: Seven-time Winternationals champ John Force and new crew chief Brian Corradi blasted to low e.t. of the first round of Funny Car, roaring to a 3.890 in his Peak Camaro. It was Force’s 1,900 round of racing and boosted his win-loss record to 1,312-588 (69.0 percent). Force will have second-round lane choice against longtime rival Ron Capps, whose 3.933 was the third best pass of the round behind Shawn Langdon’s solid 3.930.

One of the round’s highlights was battle between brother Cruz and Frank Pedregon. Cruz, in his new Snap-on Charger, took the coasting 4.29 win after Frank shook the tires hard in the Worsham Family Toyota.

Funny Car round 2: Robert Hight set low e.t. of the meet with 3.856 in beating Bob Tasca III and will take on teammate John Force in the semifinals.

Force joined Hight in the final by stopping Ron Capps in the 99th meeting of their respective careers. Force will have to cede lane choice to his Hight after a 3.900.

Beckman, who beat Cruz Pedregon handily with a 3.875, will take on teammate Tommy Johnson Jr., who was just a thousandth of a second slower with a 3.876 in beating Shawn Langdon.

Funny Car semifinals: Jack Beckman, who has two Winternationals victories to his credit -– both in Super Comp -– will get the chance to add a Pomona Funny Car Wally to his collection when he takes on Robert Hight in the final round.

Beckman, whose Super Comp wins came in 1998 and 2003, will be racing in his first final since last August in Brainerd, where he beat teammate Tommy Johnson, as he did in the finals here to advance to the money round.

Hight defeated his boss and teammate John Force with a 3.883 to reach his 72nd final and first since Dallas, where he will have lane choice over Beckman.

Funny Car final: Robert Hight earned his fourth win at Auto Club Raceway, defeating Jack Beckman by .007 second. He did it with a holeshot as he left on Beckman by .008. His Auto Club Funny Car was slower by .001, but he managed to get his 46th win anyway. Hight runnered up in Pomona to start the 2018 season, but the Southern California got the job done against a Don Schumacher Racing Funny Car to kick off the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals.

Beckman has nothing to hang his head about. He cut a .062 light and hung with Hight all the way to the eighth-mile, but then the John Force Racing Funny Car pulled away. Beckman last won in Brainerd, seven events ago. He will enter the next event (Phoenix) second in the points. That’s not a bad way to kick off the 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.

PRO STOCK

Pro Stock round 1: Steve Graham earned his first round win when Deric Kramer posted a 6.907-second elapsed time in the opening Pro Stock round. Graham didn’t light the world on fire (6.607), but those three-tenths of a second made all the difference in the world and he’ll match up against Jason Line. Line owns lane choice with a 6.536.

That wasn’t good enough for best of the round. Bo Butner ran a 6.501 as the 2017 Pro Stock champion gets a shot at Chris McGaha in round two. That’s as close as we got to a 6.40, though it looked like Rodger Brogdon had a shot. The No. 1 qualifier left before the tree activated, giving Val Smeland a free pass to the second round. He’ll face off against Alex Laughlin, who defeated Jeg Coughlin Jr. The yellow and black car experienced problems as soon as he left the clutch out.

Pro Stock round 2: Erica Enders enters the semifinals with the Camaro to beat. She unleashed a .014 reaction time on Matt Hartford and posted the best elapsed time (6.51) to boot. She will race 2017 Pro Stock world champion Bo Butner, who slowed to a 6.526. That was good enough to beat Chris McGaha because the Texan hooked a left as soon as he dropped the clutch.

Alex Laughlin got away with the slowest lap of his weekend (6.716) because Val Smeland failed to get down the race track. That earns him a meeting with Jason Line, who has had his number over the years. The Texan hopes to change that and get him back into the finals. Line is looking for his first win since the Dallas contest during the 2018 Countdown to the championship.

Pro Stock semifinals: Bo Butner got away with a .041 reaction time to take down Erica Enders and advance to the final round of Pro Stock at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals. He will battle teammate Jason Line and have lane choice thanks to his 6.518-second pass. Enders cut a .070, well below her high standards, and missed out on a final round.

Line and Alex Laughlin posted identical elapsed times, but the Summit Racing driver was much better on the tree. That got him into his first final since Dallas. No matter who wins, K.B. Racing will earn the first Pro Stock trophy of the year. Butner gets lane choice, though it doesn’t seem to matter who has it at this point. Line notched the best reaction time of the round (.018), and since the two share power … well, that might matter in the final.

Butner won this race to open the 2018 season and would love nothing more than to do it again in 2019.

Pro Stock final: Bo Butner collected his second straight Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals Pro Stock crown, defeating KB Racing teammate Jason Line again in a rematch of last year’s final.

Butner powered to the win, the 23rd of his career, with a 6.52 at 211.59, pulling away when the engine in Line’s Camaro expired at halftrack. Line was appearing in his 100th Pro Stock final.

TOP FUEL HARLEY

Top Fuel Harley final round: In a final-round battle between last year’s top-two finishers, Doug Vancil defeated reigning world champ Tii Tharpe, 6.27 to 6.32. Tharpe got the slightly better reaction time but Vancil roared by to take the victory, his second straight at the Winternationals.

With technology advances and safety always a concern the "big dawgs" do a 1000 foot track compared the the old 1320 feet ...

I won't post the results yet since most don't get to see the race live so I will post it tomorrow or Tuesday so I don't play spoiler, it is televised on FOX tonight, but I will say that there was a scary moment in the FC rounds as Tommy Johnson had the round’s unforgettable highlight, as his Make-A-Wish Dodge exploded the blower, shattering the body and losing the left rear tire, but he still got the win light when opponent Jim Campbell was disqualified for clipping the finish line lights.

What I wrote below was another reason I sold the bottomless money pit I inherited last year.
These machines are literally ticking time bombs and it is the "explosive power" of the Nitro Methane that if the mix is off or you didn't read the weather properly to get a bead on the barometric pressure and humidity among a ton of other stuff, this is what happens when a part fails to start the chain reaction as they produce over 10,000 Horsepower for 4 seconds at a time, any longer than that and you would melt the valves right out of the heads.. If interested they get really shitty gas mileage ... about 20 gallons to the mile and it is NOT cheap but then again neither is the 100K motor that you can kiss goodbye when a rod goes through the block or a piston comes flying at you at the speed of sound!

Sorry I have been slacking due to the Stanley Cup playoffs but here are the week 4 results from the Denso 4 widespread, if you haven't seen a 4 wide you need to, I saw my first and only one last year before my mam died he took me and I have been friends with top fuel driver Leah Pritchett ever since.

Anyway he is what it looked like:

NHRA FOUR-WIDE NATIONALS: SUNDAY RESULTS FROM THE STRIP AT LAS VEGAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY

Mike Salinas scores first win in Las Vegas; J.R. Todd, Bo Butner, Hector Arana Jr. win

*SHARE*TWEETMORE

NHRA

Mike Salinas captured his first win at the Denso Spark Plugs NHRA Four-Wide Nationals, while J.R. Todd, Bo Butner and Hector Arana Jr. also scored wins in Las Vegas.

Mike Salinas*picked up his first career NHRA win Sunday at the 20th annual DENSO Spark Plugs NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at the Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway to become the 107th winner in Top Fuel history.

J.R. Todd*(Funny Car),*Bo Butner*(Pro Stock) and Hector Arana Jr. (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were also victors in their respective professional Mello Yello Drag Racing Series categories.

Salinas started the race day from the No. 1 qualifier position. He powered his Scrappers Racing dragster to a victorious 3.801-second, 330.39 mph pass when he outran Brittany Force, Clay Millican and Doug Kalitta. Force finished as the Top Fuel runner-up.

“It means a lot,” Salinas said. “I have this program that I put in my head and I believed it would work. Alan Johnson (tuner) has been five years in the making. Didn’t say much, just let everything fall where it’s going to fall. We build something and now we can go racing.

“The important thing, for me, is that I have four daughters coming into the sport. I set the bar for my family all the time and now we have a good bar for them to reach and meet from the (Pro Stock) motorcycle, to the A-Fuel, to our Pro Mod coming, to everything we’re going to do. It’s going to be a great thing.”

The reigning Funny Car world champion Todd drove his DHL Toyota Camry to pick up the Funny Car title on Sunday with his 3.970 pass at 319.07. He has won three consecutive events at the Las Vegas track.

Todd faced a final four of Tommy Johnson Jr., Jack Beckman and No. 1 qualifier Tim Wilkerson, with Johnson Jr. coming in second.

“It’s all Kalitta Motorsports. It seems like ever since I’ve come on board with this team, we’ve always run well here. This whole team, all four cars, have a really good handle on this place, especially Todd Smith and Jon (Oberhofer, crew chiefs). It seems like the more we come here the better grip they get ahold of this place.”

NHRA

Salinas started the race day from the No. 1 qualifier position.

In Pro Stock, Butner picked up his third win of the 2019 season with his Jim Butner's Auto Chevy Camaro team with his 6.677 pass at 206.67. The 2017 world champ got the final win light of the day with his triple holeshot victory over the quad of Matt Hartford, Jason Line and Greg Anderson. Hartford was second to the stripe and finished as the runner-up.

Butner’s Sunday win is his first four-wide win and his second win at the Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

“I learned that you can’t be a lazy winner,” Butner stated. “The win light is off now and it’s time for the next race. We’ve got to work hard but I’m with the best team. I’m in the final with Greg and Jason, we’re like three brothers. It’s just great to get that with Ken (Black, team owner). It worked out to be a good day and just very blessed and can’t complain.”

Arana Jr. picked up the win on his Lucas Oil EBR amongst a quadrant of champions consisting of reigning champ Matt Smith, five-time champion Andrew Hines and four-time champion Eddie Krawiec. M. Smith came in second as Hines broke on the starting line and Krawiec fouled out with his red light start.

Arana Jr. cruised to a 6.907 at 195.97 to pick up his second win at the Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway facility.

“That Lucas Oil motorcycle, she’s bad to the bone,” Arana Jr. said. “That’s just a testament to my team and the consistency. We weren’t the fastest but we were consistent all weekend. I worked on my lights and they got better and better and I stepped it up when I needed to step it up in the final because the final was stacked. I love going up against those guys. It makes me put out my best. It’s just something about racing those guys that you just dig deep and really go for it.”

The NHRA circuit will travel to Houston to the Mopar Express Lane NHRA SpringNationals Presented By Pennzoil April 12-14 for the fifth race of the 2019 season.

The reigning Funny Car world champion Todd drove his DHL Toyota Camry to pick up the Funny Car title on Sunday with his 3.970 pass at 319.07

Week 5:

NHRA SPRINGNATIONALS: SUNDAY RESULTS, UPDATED POINT STANDINGS

Brittany Force and Robert Hight pull off John Force Racing nitro sweep in Houston

NHRA

Brittany Force and teammate Robert Hight shared the NHRA winner's circle for the third time in their careers.

John Force Racing made a statement this weekend at the 32nd annual Mopar Express Lane NHRA SpringNationals presented by Pennzoil when the team claimed both nitro category victories: Brittany Force in Top Fuel and Robert Hight in Funny Car.

That statement? The crews at JFR are ready to play ball during the 2019 Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season.

Force entered race day Sunday at Houston Raceway qualified No. 1 with hopes to repeat her win at Houston from a year ago. On her way to victory, she took out Top Fuel racers Cameron Ferre, Doug Kalitta, Clay Millican and finally three-time world champion Antron Brown in the final with her lap of 3.749-seconds at 302.14 mph in her Advance Auto Parts dragster.

“All of John Force Racing was on a mission this morning,” Force said. “My dad and I were No. 1, the first time father and daughter have ever qualified No. 1 at an event. That’s something very special my dad and I will share. We were looking for a win but to be able to do it with Robert Hight by my side in that Auto Club car, that’s pretty awesome.”

In the Funny Car ranks, Hight picked up his third victory of the 2019 season in his AAA Texas Chevrolet Camaro SS Funny Car and his third career win at Houston. He defeated Jonnie Lindberg, 2018 Funny Car champ J.R. Todd, JFR owner and No. 1 qualifier John Force and finally Matt Hagan in the final with a lap of 3.941 at 310.84.

“I’m proud of [my team], never disbelieved in them,” Hight said. “That’s why we have three wins already this season because they’re so good. Down at the other end, they said, ‘How do you keep your team in check?’ Really, it’s the other way around. They keep me in check. I’ve never seen a more focused group of individuals. They keep their heads down, work hard, don’t do a lot of talking and we got the job done.

“Brittany and I, this is the third time we’ve got to double up. We seem to do really well together in these circumstances. It was really cool to be down there when she made the [turn off] and throw a bunch of Mello Yello on her car.”

Houston marks the third JFR team double-up win in the nitro categories, all earned by Brittany Force and Hight. The first win came in 2016 in Gainesville and the second in 2017 in Dallas, the year the pair both went on to win championships in their respective categories.

The Mello Yello Drag Racing Series will have a weekend off before traveling to zMAX Dragway near Charlotte, N.C. for the NGK Spark Plugs NHRA Four-Wide Nationals, April 26-28.

NHRA FOUR-WIDE NATIONALS: SUNDAY RESULTS, UPDATED STANDINGS FROM CHARLOTTE

Reigning Top Fuel champ Steve Torrence won his first of the season, Shawn Langdon his first in the Funny Car class and Andrew Hines his 50th in Pro Stock Motorcycle

*URL=http://pimpandhost.com/image/111147127][/URL]

Reigning world champion Torrence piloted his Capco Contractors Top Fuel dragster to the winner’s circle for the first time this season with his pass of 3.778 at 323.19, taking out Leah Pritchett, Clay Millican and Terry McMillen.

Shawn Langdon*picked up his first Funny Car win at the 10th annual NGK Spark Plugs*NHRA Four-Wide Nationals*to become only the second driver in history to win in both the Top Fuel and Funny Car categories at zMAX Dragway. He is the 17th driver in NHRA history to secure victories in both categories.

Steve Torrence*(Top Fuel) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were also victors in their respective NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series categories.

Langdon clinched his first Funny Car victory when he powered his Global Electronics Technology Toyota Camry Funny Car to an impressive run of 4.125-seconds at 305.08 mph. Langdon also secured his first Top Fuel victory at zMAX Dragway in 2012. He faced a final quadrant of Robert Hight, John Force and Matt Hagan. Hight finished as the runner-up in the category.

“There’s so many things that I’ve gone through to get to this point,” said Langdon. “The reason I’m here is because of the people I’ve been surrounded by. They’re the ones who picked me to drive the car and I’ve been so fortunate to get to drive for a legend like Connie Kalitta. Working with a guy like that, and then working with a guy like J.R. (Todd) who’s a teammate and champion, very talented. I bounce ideas off of him all the time. And then working with Nicky Boninfante, who’s worked with some of the greatest drivers out here and to bring Del Worsham in, that has been a big key factor. Working with these guys has really elevated my game.”

Torrence piloted his Capco Contractors Top Fuel dragster to the winner’s circle for the first time this season with his pass of 3.778 at 323.19 taking out Leah Pritchett, Clay Millican and Terry McMillen.

Reigning world champion Torrence piloted his Capco Contractors Top Fuel dragster to the winner’s circle for the first time this season with his pass of 3.778 at 323.19, taking out Leah Pritchett, Clay Millican and Terry McMillen. Millican came in second. Torrence is the sixth different winner in Top Fuel this season.

“Richard Hogan (crew chief) and Bobby Lagana (assistant crew chief) and every one of those Capco boys, they just instill confidence in you,” said Torrence. “I hadn’t been driving with the most confidence. Maybe I was driving on the defense instead of on the offense. I changed my mindset and just went out there and did what I know how to do instead of thinking about it. In Vegas at the Four-Wide I got up there and let my mind get in front of my foot. We’ve had a lot of success here at zMAX. I really like this place.”

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Hines won with his run of 6.831 at 198.17 on his Screamin' Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson Street Rod to pick up his 50th career victory and is the first rider in NHRA history to make it to this milestone. He faced teammate Eddie Krawiec, Hector Arana Jr. and Ryan Oehler in the final round. Krawiec was the runner-up in the category.

“The day went pretty good. It got hotter and hotter which made it tougher and tougher,” said Hines. “Our crew is pretty good at persevering in different weather conditions and we had to do that all weekend long. Not one of those days was similar to the other.”

The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series travels to Atlanta next week for the Arby’s NHRA Southern Nationals May 3-5 for the seventh race of the 2019 season.

Week 7:

NHRA SOUTHERN NATIONALS: SUNDAY RESULTS, UPDATED POINT STANDINGS

Ron Capps, Andrew Hines, Steve Torrence win at Arby's NHRA Southern Nationals

NHRA

Ron Capps secured his first win of the 2019 season in his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat, going 4.068 at 315.34 to win on a holeshot against Tim Wilkerson’s 4.052 at 310.05 in the final round.

Defending Top Fuel world champion*Steve Torrence*rolled to his second straight victory on Sunday with a win at the 39th annual Arby’s*NHRA Southern Nationals*at Atlanta Dragway.

Ron Capps*(Funny Car) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were also winners in their respective categories at the seventh of 24 events during the 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season.

Torrence, whose first career Top Fuel win came in Atlanta in 2012, used his 3.863-second pass at 320.20 mph in his Capco Contractors dragster to defeat Brittany Force’s 3.989 at 274.00 in a final round matchup that featured the top two qualifiers of the weekend and the two most recent Top Fuel world champs. It is the 29th career win for the Top Fuel points leader and third at the track.

Torrence, who became the first repeat winner in the class this season, also picked up round wins against Luigi Novelli, Scott Palmer and Shawn Reed to earn his second victory in three years at Georgia’s House of Speed.

“When you have a group of guys that sticks together and that continuity is there, that’s the reason for success,” Torrence said. “As a driver, I need to do my job and give them the best driving ability I possible can because they’re giving me the best race car they possibly can. My guys are second to none and I would put them up against anybody out here. We went down the track every time we needed to and we’ve had a really good car. It’s really cool to have Arby’s out here and be the first guy to ever win the Arby’s Southern Nationals.”

Force, the No. 1 qualifier, reached the final round with wins against Cameron Ferre, Antron Brown and Jordan Vandergriff.

In Funny Car, Capps secured his first win of the 2019 season in his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat, going 4.068 at 315.34 to win on a holeshot against Tim Wilkerson’s 4.052 at 310.05 in the final round. It also gives Capps his 62nd career victory, continuing his impressive string of 11 straight seasons with at least one win.

NHRA

Torrence, whose first career Top Fuel win came in Atlanta in 2012, used his 3.863-second pass at 320.20 mph in his Capco Contractors dragster to defeat Brittany Force’s 3.989 at 274.00.

Capps beat Shawn Langdon, John Force and Don Schumacher Racing teammate Tommy Johnson Jr. to reach the final round, earning his third career win at Atlanta Dragway.

“An average race car driver could have probably won in that car today,” said Capps, whose first win with crew chief Rahn Tobler came in Atlanta in 2012. “This was a car you dream about driving. Rahn Tobler pulled out the vintage Rahn Tobler, and that just gave me more and more confidence. It was just amazing and to get a Hellcat win was huge.”

Wilkerson beat Cruz Pedregon, Bob Tasca III and points leader Robert Hight to reach the finals.

Five-time Pro Stock Motorcycle world champion Hines earned his second straight victory, third overall of 2019 and 51st in his career after going 6.865 at 195.05 on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson to defeat Jerry Savoie in the final round. It also marked the 100th career win for Harley-Davidson in the class, a streak that Hines started with his first career victory in 2004.

It was another noteworthy accomplishment for Hines, who became the first rider to claim 50 wins in the class last weekend and has three victories in four races to open the 2019 Pro Stock Motorcycle season. The class points leader beat Melissa Surber, Ryan Oehler and Hector Arana Jr. to reach the final round.

“It was a good day and my motorcycle is nothing like I’ve ever had in my career,” said Hines, who now has three wins at Atlanta Dragway. “It’s working really well and doesn’t do much wrong. All in all, it was a fantastic day. To get 100 wins for Harley-Davidson, it’s monumental. It was a very big struggle at first, and there’s been trials and tribulations, but it’s really nice to get the 100th.”

Savoie knocked off Cory Reed, Steve Johnson and Eddie Krawiec en route to the finals.

The Mello Yello Drag Racing Series continues May 17-19 with the Virginia NHRA Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park in Richmond.

Week 8:

NHRA VIRGINIA NATIONALS: SUNDAY RESULTS, UPDATED POINTS

Andrew Hines and Bo Butner continued their incredible starts to the 2019 seasons; Ron Capps and Steve Torrence go back-to-back

NHRA

Ron Capps secured his second consecutive Funny Car Wally in his NAPA Brakes Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat, defeating the defending world champion J.R. Todd in the finals.

Andrew Hines*and*Bo Butner*continued their incredible starts to the 2019 seasons at the Virginia*NHRA*Nationals, while Atlanta winners Ron Capps and Steve Torrence went back-to-back.

Defending Top Fuel world champion Steve Torrence secured his second consecutive victory at the Virginia NHRA Nationals and third of the season Sunday evening at Virginia Motorsports Park.

Ron Capps (Funny Car), Bo Butner (Pro Stock) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were also winners in their respective categories at the eighth of 24 events during the 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season.

Torrence walked away Sunday with his 30th Top Fuel victory in his Capco Contractors dragster with his run of 3.881-seconds at 319.82 mph to defeat Antron Brown’s 3.899 at 309.49 in the final round. This was the 10th time the pair had met in the finals. Brown won the first five and S. Torrence has clinched the last five victories.

Torrence secured round wins against Todd Paton, Scott Palmer, and his father, Billy Torrence, en route to his 45th career final round.

NHRA

Torrence walked away Sunday with his 30th Top Fuel victory in his Capco Contractors dragster with his run of 3.881-seconds at 319.82 mph to defeat Antron Brown’s 3.899 at 309.49 in the final round.

“Hands down and hats off to the whole Capco team,” Steve*Torrence said. “Those guys gave me the best race car of the day. We were the guys that went down the track four times in a row. All I had to do was not run over anything or anybody and they gave me the best car ever. Richard Hogan (crew chief) and Bobby Lagana (crew chief) they make the right calls when the pressure is on and when the heat is out there. In cowboy terms, I rode the two best horses out there.”

Brown defeated teammate Leah Pritchett, Brittany Force and Mike Salinas.

Capps secured his second consecutive Funny Car Wally in his NAPA Brakes Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat, defeating the defending world champion J.R. Todd in the finals. This win marks Capps’ 62nd Funny Car win and 63rd overall along with his 30th victory with crew chief Rahn Tobler since 2012.

Capps beat Jim Campbell, Robert Hight and teammate Tommy Johnson Jr. to reach the final round, earning his first career win at Richmond Motorsports Park.

“'Just go up there and not make a mistake' was my mindset today,” Capps said. “Tobler told me in the trailer prior to the final round, ‘I don’t know why it smoked the tires all day. Everybody has had problems and we’re just going to put it like we did first round when it went 3.99.’ I rolled it in there and obviously it went a bit slower but that’s what he went up there to do. Vintage Rahn Tobler.”

This is Butner’s fourth victory this season, first at the facility and 11th of his career. Anderson was the last driver in 2004 to secure four victories within the first five events of the season.

Butner also went to the final round of the SAMTech.Edu Factory Stock Showdown where he fell short to Drew Skillman on a holeshot.

“It’s been an amazing season and a good call to come back,” Butner stated. “We made a very good run in the final. Greg and I both made mediocre runs up until that point. The track was great. It’s very smooth and the Franklins did a great job with this place and it would be nice if we came back here a couple of times. It was fun running two cars multiple rounds today. It was a good day and I can’t complain.”

Butner defeated Wally Stroupe, Chris McGaha and Jeg Coughlin Jr. on his way to his 24th career final round.

Hines, the No. 1 qualifier, earned his third straight victory, fourth overall of 2019 and 52nd in his career.

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Hines, the No. 1 qualifier, earned his third straight victory, fourth overall of 2019 and 52nd in his career after going 6.845 at 195.68 on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson Street Rod to defeat teammate Eddie Krawiec in the final round. The last Pro Stock Motorcycle rider to win four of the first five events to start the season was Hines’ brother, Matt Hines, in 1998.

“We have developed a very good hot weather tuneup for our street rods, and that’s saying a lot,” Hines said. “We typically tend to not look forward to the middle of the season because that’s where our performance tends to fall off and people make up ground on us. Today we were able to take what we’ve learned the last couple of weeks between Charlotte when it got hot and Atlanta when it was really hot. We don’t ever go up there (the starting line) with the same tune up, ever. It was a little bit of picking on it here and there which has led to us finding the window where we need to be.”

The category points leader defeated Jianna Salinas, Ryan Oehler and defending world champion Matt Smith to reach the final round. Krawiec took down Kelly Clontz, Karen Stoffer and Hector Arana Jr. en route to his 25th final round against Hines.
