If so, you might already be in “goblin mode”
– chosen by the public as the 2022 Oxford word of the year.

According to Oxford University Press (OUP), publishers behind the Oxford English Dictionary, the slang term refers to a type of behavior which is “unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations” – traits that may have become familiar to many during lockdown.

Social media can portray idealized versions of self-improvement, from waking at 5 a.m. and drinking a green smoothie, to keeping a journal, exercising and planning your weekly meal prep.

That era may be on the way out. In its place is goblin mode – the opposite of trying to better yourself.

Given the year we’ve just experienced, ‘Goblin mode’ resonates with all of us who are feeling a little overwhelmed at this point. It’s a relief to acknowledge that we’re not always the idealized, curated selves that we’re encouraged to present on our Instagram and TikTok feeds.

The rise of ‘goblin mode’

The term was first used in 2009 but went viral on social media earlier this year, OUP said. It shot to prominence after a fake headline claimed that the rapper formerly known as Kanye West and Julia Fox broke up after she “went goblin mode.”

“The term then rose in popularity over the months following as Covid lockdown restrictions eased in many countries and people ventured out of their homes more regularly,” according to the OUP.

“Seemingly, it captured the prevailing mood of individuals who rejected the idea of returning to ‘normal life’, or rebelled against the increasingly unattainable aesthetic standards and unsustainable lifestyles exhibited on social media.”

The term’s popularity may also be linked to the growth of new social media sites like BeReal, where users are invited once a day at random to post a photo of whatever they’re doing. Goodbye carefully curated social media feeds. Hello goblin mode.

The release gives examples of examples of when the term has been used. Among the most vivid was quoted in The Guardian: “Goblin mode is like when you wake up at 2am and shuffle into the kitchen wearing nothing but a long t-shirt to make a weird snack, like melted cheese on saltines.”

“People are embracing their inner goblin, and voters choosing ‘goblin mode’ as the Word of the Year tells us the concept is likely here to stay,” added Grathwohl.

US McDonald’s franchisees fined
for making children work excessive hours

John and Kathleen Santonastasso of Bridgeville, Pennsylvania, ordered to pay $57,332 after violating child labor laws

The owners of several McDonald’s restaurants in Pennsylvania have been accused of violating child labor laws, with more than 100 children allegedly working excessive hours.

The US labor department announced on Monday that 13 McDonald’s locations in the Pittsburgh area had violated labor laws designed to protect young employees. An investigation found that 101 child employees had been working excessive hours outside allowable time periods.

The McDonald’s restaurants had been owned by John and Kathleen Santonastasso, who operate Santonastasso Enterprises, based in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania, close to Pittsburgh.

The investigation found that 14- and 15-year-olds worked more than three hours a day or more than 18 hours a week during the school week. Minors were also working past 7pm on a school night and past 9pm during summer vacation, both of which are also violations.

“Permitting young workers to work excessive hours can jeopardize their safety, wellbeing and education,” the labor department’s wage and hour district director, John DuMont, said. “Employers who hire young workers must understand and comply with federal child labor laws or face costly consequences.”

In another McDonald’s eatery also operated by Santonastasso, a 16-year-old was allowed to operate a deep fryer that did not have a device to automatically raise and lower baskets.

The Santonastassos were ordered to pay a civil penalty of $57,332.

The Santonastassos told the Washington Post that they were addressing scheduling issues in regards to child labor violations.

“We take our role as a local employer very seriously and we regret any scheduling issues that may have occurred at our restaurants,” John and Kathleen Santonastasso said in a statement.

A separate child labor investigation from earlier this month found that a Nebraska sanitation allegedly employed 31 children in job duties that are illegal for those under 18.

Can living on a diet of raw meat and leading a “caveman” lifestyle really make you as ripped as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson? Probably not without steroids, it turns out.

An internet-famous ‘primal living’ guru, called Liver King, falsely convinced his millions of followers across YouTube, TikTok and Instagram that his jacked physique was down to his unusual eating habits and rigorous fitness regime alone.

The “ancestral” lifestyle that he and his wife supposedly followed was intended to achieve “strength, health and happiness” and included living according to the “nine ancestral tenants'': to eat, sleep, move, shine, connect, cold, sun, fight, and bond. He ate raw liver, bone marrow and even bull testicles.

Social media aside, Liver King has already been making $100 million a year selling protein supplements and dried animal organs under his brands ‘Heart & Soil’ and ‘Ancestral Supplements’ - his shop charges $30 to $65 a bottle for capsules containing grass-fed beef liver.

The 45-year-old, whose real name is Brian Johnson, previously denied any accusations of steroid-use, having said on Mark Bell’s Power Project Podcast: “I don't touch the stuff. I've never done the stuff. I'm not going to do the stuff."

Johnson’s facade, however, has now dramatically dropped. In a video uploaded to his YouTube he revealed: "I lied, and I misled a lot of people…Yes, I've done steroids, and yes, I am on steroids, monitored and managed by a trained hormone clinician."

The influencer admitted that he’s been taking 120mg of testosterone per week, and apologized for misleading his followers and claiming that he really was “all-natural.”

Prior to his confession, Johnson was called out by another YouTuber called More Plates More Dates, who published an hour-long video exposing the influencer’s use of steroids, costing him $12,000 per month.

It included a leaked email from Johnson to a nutritionist confirming his steroid use and asking for more, and the results of a blood test.

Why did Liver King lie?

Johnson blamed his actions on his insecurities: "When I talk about the 85 percent of the population that suffers from self-esteem issues, that's me. I'm part of that statistic.”

The persona, he said, was “an experiment to spread the message [and] to bring awareness to the 4,000 people a day who kill themselves, the 80,000 people a day that try to kill themselves,” adding that his “fight” was to promote “ancestral living” as a solution.

Johnson also confessed that he wasn’t fully aware of the consequences, saying: “Before social media I was rich and anonymous, and after social media, I'm still rich but no longer anonymous…I never expected this kind of exposure in the public eye.”

i find the use of "even" in that sentence odd. bull testicles, cooked, are popular in any number of cultures. i would be far more afraid of eating the first two.

or are they including the testicles under "raw"?

can the human body really survive raw meat? i thought u needed to do specific things involving curing or pickling to make that work (sushi, ceviche, kitfo)?

hah! much ado about nothing. given how ridiculously small the fine was, these were minor technical violations at best. like working 20 hrs when the law says 18.

$568 a head was prolly worth the extra labor they squeezed out of the kids! i might start scheduling MORE hours if i were the santonastassos!!
