Atsushi Sakurai
J-Rock Star Atsushi Sakurai Dead at 57 Japanese rock star Atsushi Sakurai, the lead vocalist of the band Buck-Tick, has died. He was 57. According to an announcement from the rock group's official website, the musician died on Oct. 19, just hours after Buck-Tick canceled a concert appearance that same day due to his health concerns. Sakurai was reportedly rushed to the hospital, but died that day from complications stemming from a brain hemorrhage. An official statement from the band's website stated that a private funeral has already been held, and a memorial service for fans to pay their respects will be held sometime in the near future. "We are deeply sorry for the delay in making this announcement," a translated version of the statement read. "We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Sakurai. Please be advised that condolence calls and telegrams, incense, flowers, and other such expressions of sympathy will be strictly declined. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time." It continued, "This year marked the 35th anniversary of the band's debut, celebrated with a concert this September at Gunma Music Centre in Mr. Sakurai's home prefecture, leading into their 36th year." "We, the members and staff, are still in a state of confusion and disbelief over this sudden occurrence. Our sadness cannot be expressed with mere words," the statement finished. Sakurai and Buck-Tick rose to popularity in 1987 as their single "Just One More Kiss" charted in Japan. The group continued to see success for decades across the country, as songs such as "Gessekai" would chart more than 10 years later in 1998. The group also garnered international attention as anime gained popularity across the world — the band's music was featured in shows such as Trinity Blood, Shiki and XxxHolic, giving it new life in the U.S. in the '00s. Richard Moll, Night Court Star And Voice Of Harvey Dent, Has Died At 80
slashfilm.com msn.com Story by BJ Colangelo Oct. 28, 2023 A prolific TV character actor, voiceover artist, and one of the tallest performers in Hollywood has passed away. As confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, Richard Moll, known by most as the tall, bald bailiff Aristotle Nostradamus "Bull" Shannon on "Night Court" and the voice of Harvey Dent/Two-Face on "Batman: The Animated Series," died at his home in Big Bear Lake, California. He was 80. At a towering 6-foot-8-inches tall, Moll often played intimidating figures, like his first television role of "Big Thug" on "Welcome Back, Kotter," Harold the Monster on "Here's Boomer," the abominable snowman in the film "Caveman," the gigantic zombie soldier in "House," Hoagie in "The Flintstones," Mestema in "The Dungeon Master," Hugh Kane in "Scary Movie 2," and even one of the Dementors in "Jingle All the Way." Born in Pasadena, California as Charles Richard Moll, he attended the University of California at Berkeley where he studied history and psychology and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity. After graduation, Moll worked as a deputy probation officer in Alameda County, California, and as THR reports, "in ladies' hosiery at a store in San Francisco." A few years later he moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting, landing parts in commercials and a biopic about Brigham Young before nabbing small roles on shows like "The Rockford Files," "Happy Days," "Laverne & Shirley," "Mork & Mindy," and "T.J. Hooker." But everything changed once he landed the role that would make him a household name on "Night Court." When he was initially cast as Bailiff Bull, the character was supposed to be a tough-as-nails official, but Moll's naturally exuding warmth completely transformed the character. His catchphrase of "Ooooookay!" is embedded in the pop culture consciousness, with many people quoting it without even realize the origins with Moll's performance. He would eventually play himself on "The Facts of Life," and had a healthy career as a character actor, boasting over 180 roles to his resume. But for this writer, he'll always have a special place in my heart as Larry in "But I'm a Cheerleader," where he played against type as one of two gay men (along with Wesley Mann) who help gay teenagers escape from conversion therapy camp. While Moll did not return for the "Night Court" revival, he never stopped acting. He is slated to posthumously appear in a film called "Whispers and Shadows" which is in post-production, as well as a documentary called "Celluloid Wizards in the Video Wasteland: The Saga of Empire Pictures." In addition to his voiceover work on "Batman: The Animated Series," he also voiced the beat poet in Ralph Bakshi's "American Pop," Norman on "Mighty Max," Vorn the Unspeakable on "Freakazoid!," and the Devil Hulk in the video game "Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction," in addition to Death and King Minos in "Dante's Inferno." Moll is survived by his children, Chloe and Mason, and his stepchildren, Cassandra and Morgan. May he rest in peace. |

Patricia Janečková. Rising opera star 1998-2023
I am not an opera person but ran across a few of her videos. I don't know how to embed Youtube videos but please check her out. She was incredible! Credit to Operawire.com for this release: "On Oct. 1, 2023, Patricia Burda Janečková died of breast cancer. She was 25. An official statement on Facebook said, “The opera and musical singer lost her courageous fight with an aggressive disease. She passed away on October 1, 2023, surrounded by the tender care of her husband, Vlastimil Burda, and her loved ones. She left a lasting legacy through her audio and visual recordings, ensuring she will stay with us forever.” The soprano first announced her diagnosis on social Feb. 9, 2022, when she took to social media and said, “Dear friends, this year was supposed to be full of beautiful concerts and theater performances. Everything has changed. A few days ago my doctors told me I have a big fight ahead of me. Cancer has been, is and will be among us, although I have always thought that youth equals health. Biopsy results showed breast cancer. With a heavy heart, I have to leave the stage for a while and cancel all the concerts so that I can fully fight and heal. But that doesn’t mean I stop singing! As soon as I have my strength back, I will sing and record for you. Takes more to beat me! I will be grateful for any support, even through the For Artists Endowment Fund, which was established to support artists, their development, projects and help in difficult life situations.” Born on June 18, 1998, in Münchberg, Germany to Slovak parents, Janečková started singing at the age of four and went to the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts following primary school. Her first public performance was at the Antonín Dvořák Theatre, where she performed for the first time with the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra. Janečková went on to win the Talentmania TV show. In 2014, she won the international singing competition at the Concorso Internazionale di Musica Sacra in Rome. She went on to be a frequent guest at the Moravian-Silesian National Theatre, the Rudolfinum in Prague, the Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Janáček Music Festival. Colette Maze
Pianist Colette Maze dies at the age of 109 The French pianist, who thrilled audiences with a new album in the year of her 109th birthday, died on Sunday at her Paris home. French pianist Colette Maze, a network darling since her 100th birthday, died on Sunday at her Paris home at the age of 109, her family said on Tuesday November 21. The religious ceremony will take place on Tuesday, November 28 at 10:30 a.m. at the Saint-Roch church in Paris, the source added. Her last album, "109 ans de piano", on which she played Gershwin, Piazzolla, Schumann and Debussy, had been available on music platforms since July. Born a month before the outbreak of the First World War and almost four years before the death of one of her favorite composers, Claude Debussy, the pianist was still playing the piano four hours a day when AFP met her in the spring. "Moi, je suis jeune" (I'm young) "Moi, je suis jeune", she exclaimed at the time. "(...) There are people who are eternally young, amazed by everything, and then there are people who are jaded by everything and who have never loved anything, not even their boyfriend, if that's possible! Born into a bourgeois family in Paris, she began playing the piano at the age of 5, but her parents were opposed to her becoming a professional pianist. At the age of 15, however, she was admitted to the École normale de musique de Paris, where she studied with the famous Alfred Cortot and Nadia Boulanger. Cortot, who taught for decades at the École normale de musique and the Conservatoire de Bagneux (Hauts-de-Seine), was also the custodian of the Cortot method, based on exercises to relax and soften all muscles. Andre Braugher, ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ and ‘Homicide: Life on the Street’ Star, Dies at 61
VARIETY yahoo.com Michaela Zee and Pat Saperstein December 12, 2023 Andre Braugher, the two-time Emmy winning actor who starred in the hit television series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Homicide: Life on the Street,” died Monday after a brief illness. He was 61. Braugher’s publicist Jennifer Allen confirmed the news of his death to Variety. Braugher was known for his role as the upright Captain Raymond Holt on the police procedural comedy series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” from 2013 until 2021. His character’s stoic and no-nonsense personality but deep sense of humanity made him an instant fan favorite of the show, especially when paired with Andy Samberg’s hotshot Det. Jake Peralta in a scene. He won a lead actor Emmy for his role as Detective Frank Pembleton on NBC’s “Homicide: Life on Street” in 1998, his last year on the series. Braugher’s intense performance made him one of the breakout stars to emerge from the critically beloved police drama that hailed from Barry Levinson, Tom Fontana and David Simon, the former Baltimore Sun reporter who wrote the 1991 nonfiction book, “Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets.” Braugher also won another Emmy for miniseries or movie for his performance as a master criminal for FX’s 2006 series “Thief.” Braugher confronted the complicated legacy of playing police officers throughout his career in a 2020 Variety cover story. “Cops breaking the law to quote, ‘defend the law,’ is a real terrible slippery slope. It has given license to the breaking of law everywhere, justified it and excused it,” he said. “That’s something that we’re going to have to collectively address — all cop shows.” Born in Chicago, Braugher graduated from Stanford University, then attended Juilliard School in the drama division. His first screen role came as a Union solider in “Glory,” in which he played Thomas Searles, a free Black man who joins the first Black regiment. In the TV movie revival of “Kojak,” he played Kojak’s sidekick, then moved on to “Homicide: Life on the Street.” He also played a Detective in “Hack” from 2002 to 2004, then switched it up as a psychiatrist on “House, M.D.” Braugher was nominated for two Primetime Emmys for supporting actor for “Men of a Certain Age.” He continued to appear in feature films as his TV career expanded, with roles in “City of Angels,” “Frequency,” “Poseidon,” “Primal Fear,” “Duets,” “The Mist,” “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,” “Salt” and “The Gambler.” He told Variety his family was more important than pursuing a big lead role. “It’s been an interesting career, but I think it could have been larger,” he says. “I think it could have spanned more disciplines: directing, producing, all these other different things. But it would have been at the expense of my own life.” He is survived by his wife Ami Brabson, who also appeared in “Homicide: Life on the Street,” and three children. |
