Tis saying a bit much - covers that are better than the original. Some are, for me, the better part is when the cover is stripped down or deconstructed, or simply done in a different way...that is not a paint by the numbers copy of the original. In that spirit I like these:
Paint It Black by Band of Susans Wire tune - Map ref 41 degrees N 93 degrees W by My Bloody Valentine (truly amazing) find it on the Wire cover compilation titled Whore this is an odd one...find the Guns N Roses video collection "Making the Videos" and watch for them doing a version of Theme from The Godfather, with Duff McKeegan on drums. Pretty much all the covers on A Perfect Circle Emotive - particularly Joni Mitchell's "Fiddle and the Drum." Velvet Underground - Sunday Morning two versions one by New York Loose and one by Orchestral Manouvres in the Dark (good for boom car, lots of bass) A gal named Sheila Shandra fronted a band called Monsoon they did an excellent cover of the Beatles Tomorrow Never Knows |

Seal -Steve Miller
I would have to say that Seal's cover of "Fly Like An Eagle" is WAY better than the original.
Also his version of "Manic Depression" (Jimi Hendrix) with Jeff Beck on lead guitar ROCKS it out of the park!

Hmm, good point. That reminds me of the "Tribute" CD they have on iTunes for Rammstein. It was pretty awful. The songs did not even resemble the originals, Some where sped up and others were slowed down, the pitches were off, and the vocals were just grating.

It would be very hard to beat Zeppelin. For a pretty good stab, find the program, "Prince Live in Las Vegas" and check out his version of Whole Lotta Love. Pretty cool.

Well, there is this album "Common threads", which is a tribute compilation of The Eagles songs, done from various country artists. This tribute album is waaayy better than the originals, if that is somehow possible.

"Without You" (Badfinger) covered by Harry Nilsson is one of the greats, hands down.

____________________ Nilsson also sang backup vocals on Ringo Starr's cover of the old Johnny Burnette tune "You're Sixteen". (BTW_ the Ringo Starr album is the last & only album to feature all 4 of the Beatles post-breakup) |

"(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me" (written by Burt Bacharach & Hal David). This has been covered a few times but I think the 1983 version by British group Naked Eyes is by far the best.
