My version of virtual dub does not edit VOB files. It will not even allow me to open the VOB file. There are many versions and many plugins for virtual dub, so it may be possible to work with VOB files but I am not sure how.

If you are able to open VOB files in your Virtual Dub program then it would seem to me that you could open all the VOB files in one segment by continuously using the "append AVI segment" feature until all segments of the VOB files are added. This method works for avi files for me. I can add numerous avi files to the editor timeline.

I only use VDub for avi files. I use Womble Multimedia Mpeg Video Wizard for dvd ripped files such as the VOB file. It is not a freeware, but if you do a little searching I am sure there is a version of it floating around out there for free download.

I just loaded the Virtual Dub pack that has all three versions it installed very easily. And I went straight in as a beginner and it opened up vob files I had just ripped from a new DVD.

But I would like to be able to open all the vob files, that is the whole movie.

Even though Virtual dub seems very popular I am finding it hard to find a good written tutorial on it.

I just cut out a 4 minute clip and it was 1.4 gigs big dur.
Till I found out there is a compression option that needs to be set each session.

I am sure there are lots of settings to learn.

so what exactly you want to do? open/edit vob files and convert them to what? avi/mkv/mp4 using what encoder xvid/divx/x264 ?

I'd like to be able to open up the whole move (all of its vobs)

And then be able to save it as one avi file

And then be able to cut a few clips out in avi.

I don't know much about encoders, so I suppose I would use xvid.

virtualdub mpeg2 1.6.19 (version I have) could not add append .vob files, so either you have to cut it from separate files with encoding each or use some other program. And using xvid/avi is inferior to h264/x264 in either mkv or mp4 if you do not have some restrictions like your table player do not support mkv files.

My setup would be cut first using mpg2cut2, then use HDConvertToX do convert to avi or mkv or mp4 using xvid or x264. That way you do not need do encode whole movie (time consuming) and you have nice videos that way.

If you have a number of VOB files making up a movie you can merge the files together with VOBMerge before opening in VirtualDub. It is a very small prog and its free, easy to use and quite fast at merging VOBs into one file.



My preference for encoding is Xvid video and MP3Lame for audio. The lower the bitrate in the Xvid configuration the smaller the file, but the lower the quality. Higher bitrates give bigger files and better quality. Suggest you select a small section of the vid you want to encode and encode it at different bitrates to get a feel for quality versus size.
