I have definitely made some posts about my process a few times in this thread, but I need to make another with updates since then, so expect that soon.

Yes, Topaz is great! It is the main app I use to enhance videos that are already HD and it is what I use to upscale SD files. Hybrid is a very robust app, but I find StaxRip is easier to get around in and it is the other main app I use aside from Topaz Video AI. My workflow goes like this...

I drop it into Topaz to see what kind of result i can get with tweaking. I almost always go to Enhancement --> Proteus --> Manual. Then click the "Estimate" button. Usually it sets the Revert Compression slider a little too high so I decrease that by around 5 - 10, and then set the bottom slider (antialias/deblur) to around 50 and then check the preview. I tweak from there.

If I have to increase revert compression too much (which will wipe out fine detail like skin texture) then I close Topaz and use StaxRip to prep the file by running a TemporalDenoise filter to clean up some artifacts and then drop it back in topaz and repeat the process again.

Once the export from Topaz completes I use StaxRip to tweak color, contrast, brightness, saturation, and hue.

After getting the exported file from StaxRip I finally encode it in x265 with the FFMPEG that is packaged with StaxRip. I do encodes using CPU only. GPU encodes can be MUCH faster but the quality and file size for CPU encodes are superior.

I usually do 5 - 10 of these to have the final file ready to encode and then I run a CLI batch script that processes all of the files one by one in a folder.

PS: The quality of your source file determines how good your final file will be so it is worth trying to find the best quality source file that you can to work with.

PPS: Do the exports from Topaz and the exports from StaxRip at the max quality that you can. In staxrip I use the highest quality with a speed of fast or faster. This will result in high quality files but they are large. A 30 min scene will be around 4 GB. Have a large fast drive (like a SSD) is best.

I'm still reading through this thread gaining knowledge . so my apologies if this has been asked. But are you using pirated copies of these programs? I can find them myself , no need to link. Just wanted to know if they were out there . Or did you buy the full programs?

Sure, before I upgraded my system at the end of last year, I was using a RX 5700 XT. Any GPU should work, but will just be slower. You could always upscale to a very good 720p and then use the SuperResXBR feature in StaxRip to increase it x2 to 1440 and then reduce to 1080. That would likely be much quicker than upscaling to 1440 with Topaz and then reducing to 1080 (which is what I do most of the time).
