Metal: A Headbanger's Journey
Sam Dunn is a 30-year old anthropologist who wrote his graduate thesis on the plight of Guatemalan refugees. Recenly he has decided to study the plight of a different culture, one he has been a part of since he was a 12-year old: the culture of heavy metal. Sam sets out on a global journey to find out why this music has been consistently stereotyped, dismissed and condemned and yet is loved so passionately by its millions of fans. Along the way, Sam explores metals' obsession with some of life's most provacative subjects - sexuality, religion, violence and death - and discovers some things about the culture that even he can't defend. Shot on location in the UK, Germany, Norway, Canada and the US, this documentary is the first of its kind. It is both a defense of a long-misunderstood art form and a window for the outsider into the spectacle that is heavy metal. Why? Are you really asking me WHYYYY?
Cause only one thing really set me free: heavy metal - loud as it can be! Seriously, metal with all its subgenres is simply perfect for any mood I can be in, and there's always a guitar solo to air guitar to!

Speaking as a classically trained musician, shut it!, I can honestly say more then any other genre of music metal, at least from about the early 70's - about '95, had the best musicians.
The pinnacle of this would be the hair bands from the 80's. Yeah, they looked goofy as hell but those dudes in heels had serious chops. well most of them. When I'm bored I scour Youtube looking for old 80's bands that I've never heard of. It takes me back to a magical time where everyone could play a fucking instrument and Biber, and John "hood-pass" Mayer wouldn't have even got record deals... Oh, what a magical -Aqua Net- smelling place.
