Best guess, without knowing the episode. This party had some people at it who were "posh", they were probably of the "Home Counties Set" and therefore went horse-riding and fox-hunting, the "gee-up" gala may have been something to do with that. Quote:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knocker-up As alarm clocks gained popularity, the term gained new meanings from the 1930s onwards. It was so far as I'm aware used to refer to pregnancy by the 1960s. Daphne's misunderstanding, could simply be a play on a general American view of the English, or that her supposed dialect still used the older term. For similar annoying American misunderstandings do some research into the complete balls-up Castle has recently made of the Geordie accent in "And Justice for All". Quote:

i guess "gee up" didn't register with me b/c it's always "giddy up" in the US. had he said "giddy up gala" i still wouldn't have gotten the reference (horses = posh folk not a common image here; horses would more likely imply bumpkins or hicks to us), but i'd have at least understood the indiv words. as "gee up", tho, i couldn't even get that far.
btw, didn't we have a discussion about the citizen smith theme song**? it's o tannenbaum/o christmas tree, which is apparently known better in the UK as some commie/labour anthem "the red flag" (completely unknown to us). i recall someone even saying that few brits would know the christmas version, but i just found one ep in which the song plays during a christmas SCENE...clearly the writers were expecting that most viewers would recognize the dual meaning. otoh, we (apparently) use the tune for several state anthems over here. i only know this b/c it startles me every time it comes on at the beginning of the preakness (big horse race). like most viewers, i'm thinking "why the hell are they playing christmas carols in may?!" ditto and double for gone w the wind: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maryla...ater_influence i'm willing to bet that "some viewers" there is somewhere in the neighbourhood of 99.9%.... ----- ** not finding it anywhere! deleted? |

recently learned that "bread" for money comes by way of "cutter" > "bread and butter". so we also have that one.
funny, i'd always assumed it was a biblical reference! bread of life, sharing loaves, yadda yadda. but nope; CRS. Quote:

preggo chick in maggie cole at one point says "hormones making me all...gi' emoshie".
i assume emoshie is emotional -- tho general absense on google has me puzzled -- but what is "gi' "? just "git"? not a place i'd use "get" to begin with -- "hormones making me all...get emotional" sounds a bit off to me. but my only guess so far. |

do brits routinely refer to the (outdoor) ground as "the floor"?
young hyacinth depicts her father passing out on the sidewalk/pavement, to which she exclaims "oh dear, there's daddy lying on the floor in drink!" odd to yank ears. |
