Scan time will vary based on computer speed, HDD type/speed, and the number of files to be scanned. Crashing I'd expect to be a system problem, hardware or software, but the BSOD should be an indicator of what's happening.

All I do for anti-virus protection is run weekly quick scans with windows defender and malwarebytes free with full scans every few months. I also do weekly image backups of my OS drive as well as having all important files/media backed up to external drives.
I believe malwarebytes free is worth having installed for on-demand scans, but premium is too much of a resource hog having real time protection running constantly in the background |

If you want to ditch Malwarebytes, I'd replace it with Emsisoft Emergency Kit. It's free and portable.

i dont plan on replacing it, i plan to download it again in a year or so, full scan then get rid of it again, its no longer worth my time or my computers resources and memory, again, i dont care what model, make or year a computer is, NO scan, on any device of anything should take over 5 hours. MWB also makes it so while its scanning, you cant use the computer cause everything freezes, its not only impractical but its dangerous

Since buying my first Win 10 machine three and a half years ago I've stopped using all anti virus/anti malware progs except for the built in Windows Defender. So far I've had zero problems. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I think the built in Windows Defender does a pretty good job all by itself. Obviously though, you still need to surf with care and take all necessary precautions opening email attachments etc.
Also I'm not too worried about getting a virus as I back up all my data to removable discs almost on a daily basis. I suppose the worst that could happne is that I get a really nasty virus that actually destroys my PC. That would be bad, but I still wouldn't lose any data because of my backup system. |

FINALLY, good advice,
im not to worried about a virus, my biggest concern was that malware you hear of that can take your pictures files videos etc for 'ransom' that bitcoin hacking thing, the more you watch it, the more it scares you into thinking it can happen but then you need to realize, companys are more prone to that, not home computers, i mean obviously of that ever happened id be beyond f@cked, but still, the chances of that are pretty slim, as you said, dont intentionally open a weird file or a bad website that you know isnt safe, i remember a long time ago, like years ago i used Yahoo messenger and that gave me a virus, so its really common sense. I actually really like windows defender, i run a full scan every few weeks, see what pops up and i move on, even if i did have malware that finds it Quote:

i still kinda wish WIN10 let us keep windows security essentials, i absolutely LOVED that from the updates to the interface to the scan speeds, that was really the only thing i wanted to keep after i got windows 10

That's all I've used as well. Testing has shown that it works as well as 3rd party programs. |
